Violation of a Social Norm

Social norms are prescriptions for accepted or expected behaviors. Your assignment is to violate one of the five norms listed below:

1. Sing loudly in public – restaurant, in line at a store, walking through the hallways, etc.

2. Position yourself 4 – 6 inches from an acquaintance’s nose during a conversation. This is not be a close friend or family member.

The average social personal space is between 18 inches and 4 feet.

3. Stand by your chair in a restaurant and recite “Itsy Bitsy Spider” (hand gestures included) or another Nursery Rhyme.

4. Continuously jump up and down while waiting in a check-out line at the grocery or department store.

5. Step onto an elevator that is crowded (at least two or three people) with strangers, and after the doors close, introduce yourself to the group and start a conversation.

While you are doing this experiment, you should not do anything that involves breaking a law, disrupting a class or public event or say something that is threatening or hurtful to others. Please respect those around you.

When the violation is completed, write a three paragraph summary of the way you felt while violating the norm and the reactions of those who witnessed the violation.

Paragraph #1 – Describe the violation and the location. Can include the number of witnesses and type of environment (5 sentences minimum).

Paragraph #2 – Describe how others reacted to your violation. How did you feel? (5 sentences minimum).

Paragraph #3 – Overall experience – conclusion (3 sentences minimum).
