00:00:01 [MUSIC PLAYING] There's more than one way of getting things done.
00:00:14 Good managers do it every day.
00:00:16 However, there's something about how leaders work that sets them apart.
00:00:20 An effective leader influences those around them, turning complex problems into simple solutions.
00:00:26 But not for the sake of their own ego.
00:00:29 Let's look at some scenarios.
00:00:37 [MUSIC PLAYING] Steve, where are the new product sales?
00:00:53 The board is setting the department's budget tomorrow, at 8:00 AM, based on this report.
00:00:58 I know.
00:00:58 I'm sorry.
00:00:59 I stuffed up.
00:01:01 I need a solution.
00:01:05 Well?
00:01:08 We need to act today.
00:01:11 Melinda has the data I left out.
00:01:13 Call her.
00:01:15 She's on leave.
00:01:17 Find someone else with the data.
00:01:21 There must be someone.

00:01:24 I don't know.
00:01:27 The board has a full report tomorrow at 8:00 AM.
00:01:31 It'll be there.
00:01:45 Steve, you left out the new product sales.
00:01:49 The board needs this by 8:00 AM tomorrow.
00:01:53 I'm sorry.
00:01:54 I know I stuffed up.
00:01:57 OK, let's think solutions.
00:02:01 I can't believe I've done this.
00:02:02 Don't worry about that for now.
00:02:06 Who else has the data?
00:02:08 Melinda.
00:02:09 Great, call her.
00:02:10 She's on leave.
00:02:12 Somebody else must have the data.
00:02:18 Think of the broader group, of the other people you worked with on this.
00:02:27 Suzie, but she's in a meeting all afternoon.
00:02:31 Can you get her, by close of business?
00:02:32 I'll find a way.
00:02:33 Brilliant.

00:02:36 If you hit a wall, come and see me.
00:02:38 I will.
00:02:39 Thanks, Amanda.
00:02:45 Effective leaders work with and through people.
00:02:48 Taking them in the right direction, where everyone benefits.
00:02:52 During a crisis, they utilize these skills to great effect.
00:02:56 Lisa or Amanda, which are you more like?
00:03:07 [MUSIC PLAYING] We've all been dealing with the new client.
00:03:13 But I was the one who clinched the deal so, according to the rules, it's my account.
00:03:18 I'm just concerned that this is causing conflicts.
00:03:21 I know others really wanted this client.
00:03:23 Conflict how?
00:03:25 Resentment, jealousy, difficult work environment.
00:03:29 But you made it clear this was the opportunity you've been waiting for.
00:03:32 Oh, It is.
00:03:33 It's great.
00:03:34 But-- It's only natural others are going to feel negatively towards you for a while.
00:03:40 To be honest, I hadn't expected it.
00:03:43 Look, Kathy, you have to realize being ambitious has its pitfalls.
00:03:46 Not everyone is going to be your best friend.

00:03:48 These are people I've worked for a long time.
00:03:51 The price you pay.
00:03:52 It'll be fine, trust me.
00:04:07 I keep telling myself, it'll be fine.
00:04:09 But it's not.
00:04:11 What kind of conflict?
00:04:14 Resentment, jealousy, difficult work environment.
00:04:18 This is Disappointing news.
00:04:20 Your positive this is all happening on the back of your new client?
00:04:25 I'm sure.
00:04:26 I feel isolated.
00:04:29 People are treating me differently.
00:04:31 In what ways?
00:04:33 Less engaged, indifferent.
00:04:37 But nothing specific you can think of?
00:04:42 The vibe just feels wrong.
00:04:44 OK, these feelings are entirely legitimate.
00:04:49 Is it possible you're projecting some of your stress?
00:04:52 I don't understand.
00:04:54 Well, sometimes we perceive situations more negatively than they actually are.
10/26/2019
5/11
00:05:00 It's also possible that they've noticed a change in your behavior.
00:05:07 I hadn't thought of that.
00:05:09 Don't be afraid to talk it over with them.
00:05:11 It's not easy when there's a change in management.
00:05:16 Over the last 20 years, we've seen the role of the leader change dramatically.
00:05:20 Intangibles, such as employee morale and emotional well being, are now integral to successful organizations.
00:05:28 Leaders who ignore or underestimate the human aspect do so at their own peril.
00:05:34 [MUSIC PLAYING] One of the constant dilemmas leaders face is how to manage their employees.
00:05:53 Too much management, and staff can feel throttled and disempowered.
00:05:57 Too little, and they can feel lost and unproductive.
00:06:01 Effective leaders find a balance.
00:06:03 They provide opportunity for innovation and emerging leadership, but do so within a context that ensures a desirable outcome.
00:06:12 I went through the brief, and I've got some ideas for a new approach.
00:06:16 We had a similar program last time that was very popular.
00:06:18 Take Steve aside and brainstorm some fresh marketing campaign.
00:06:21 Sure.
00:06:24 I was actually hoping to use social media as a new platform, rather than newspapers, TV, and radio.
00:06:30 My concern is the way people, nowadays, are accessing information.
00:06:34 Sounds risky.
00:06:36 There's a lot riding on this.
10/26/2019
6/11
00:06:37 Absolutely.
00:06:37 I've already prepared a strategy for Steve to look at.
00:06:43 Look, the new budget doesn't have any room for this.
00:06:45 Even though a number of our competitors already have a large online presence?
00:06:49 That might be, but my hands are tied.
00:06:51 This could open up a whole new market.
00:06:54 Yes, that's one point of view.
00:06:56 The other is that we're already very successful in the markets we already know.
00:07:00 I'd be happy to go over the information I already have.
00:07:03 Look, I'm all for new ideas, but not at the expense of ones that already work well.
00:07:14 This is a completely new direction for us.
00:07:17 I know, I've developed a strategy for Steve to look at.
00:07:22 It's good.
00:07:23 Very detailed.
00:07:24 Thanks.
00:07:25 I think we'd be missing out on a whole new audience if we didn't branch out.
00:07:29 And you're confident that this is the right approach for us?
00:07:32 There's risk, but minimal.
00:07:34 We've fallen behind in new media, so we'll need to make a leap at some stage.
00:07:39 OK.
10/26/2019
7/11
00:07:40 Let's update last years marketing strategy as a plan B.
00:07:45 Resource wise, we'd struggle.
00:07:47 Yes, there's very little room in the budget for new ventures.
00:07:51 However, I could get together a small team to work on the update.
00:07:55 That would be great.
00:07:58 But I want you to lead them.
00:08:02 What about social media?
00:08:05 Steve and I will oversee it.
00:08:07 But I want you to work with Melinda and the rest of the team.
00:08:09 Steve should also be involved in the discussions, as he is our IT person.
00:08:18 I realize this is your idea.
00:08:19 And I'm impressed with the work that you've done.
00:08:22 But Steve has an IT background.
00:08:24 And I need to see the allocation the money.
00:08:26 I was really hoping for a new challenge.
00:08:29 This is it.
00:08:31 You've already proven your innovation.
00:08:33 And I'm expecting that you'll do the same with the tasks that I've set you.
00:08:37 I hope so.
00:08:39 Look, if we can accomplish both strategies, it'll be a great achievement for everyone involved.
10/26/2019
8/11
00:08:45 I'll see if any improvements can made to last year's marketing.
00:08:48 I'm sure there will be.
00:08:50 Great.
00:08:51 Let's meet again in two weeks.
00:08:54 That gives us a week before the launch of the campaign.
00:08:57 If Steve or I get stuck, we'll be sure to get you involved.
00:09:01 I'd appreciate that.
00:09:07 Leadership is undoubtedly challenging.
00:09:09 Change can be rapid and unpredictable.
00:09:12 But even under pressure, an effective leader is able to create an aura of excitement, through meaningful activities that make a difference.
00:09:21 They also realize that not everything rests on their shoulders.
00:09:25 The overall goal is most important, not who takes the spoils.
00:09:35 [MUSIC PLAYING] It's an age old question, are leaders born or made?
00:09:49 Well not everyone might agree, the answer is a simple one.
00:09:52 Anyone can learn the habits and skills necessary for leadership.
00:10:01 Here you go.
00:10:03 Hi, Kathy.
00:10:04 Take a seat.
00:10:06 Thanks.
00:10:07 So it's been two weeks.
10/26/2019
9/11
00:10:08 How's the campaign coming along?
00:10:10 To be honest, it's a struggle.
00:10:12 I don't think I'm cut out for leadership.
00:10:14 Really?
00:10:14 What's been the biggest challenge?
00:10:16 All of it, engaging staff, pulling resources together, keeping my cool.
00:10:22 I need help.
00:10:24 I'm happy to assist you where I can.
00:10:27 But do you feel you should've come to me earlier?
00:10:29 Probably.
00:10:31 I guess I was trying to prove I could do it on my own.
00:10:34 Which can happen.
00:10:35 I've been guilty of it myself.
00:10:37 I look at you, and you have it all together.
00:10:39 People are motivated.
00:10:40 They listen.
00:10:41 You get things done.
00:10:42 I don't have any of that.
00:10:43 First, you have the desire to lead.
00:10:47 That's a good start.
10/26/2019
10/11
00:10:48 Second, what you see with me is an accumulation of many years of learning.
00:10:54 But you make it seem so natural.
00:10:57 After a while, perhaps.
00:10:59 I've gradually honed my leadership skills, a lot of false starts and mistakes, a lot of dark days.
00:11:08 So what can I do?
00:11:10 I really want to make this work.
00:11:12 Maybe by trying so hard, you're clouding your judgment.
00:11:16 Take time to observe your team.
00:11:19 Learn what makes them tick.
00:11:21 Ensure they always know where you're taking them.
00:11:25 And if they don't like the direction?
00:11:27 This sounds corny, but you need to create an atmosphere where they feel like they're missing out by not following you and the rest of the team.
00:11:36 I'm not charismatic like that.
00:11:38 You don't have to be.
00:11:39 It's about being assertive and confident in the direction you're taking and open to learning from those around you.
00:11:46 Some very successful leaders understand the limelight is not always on them.
00:11:52 I think they're beginning to sense my desperation.
00:11:55 Maybe it's too late to re-energize them.
00:11:58 OK, the process wasn't perfect.
00:12:00 But you've got a great opportunity in the next two weeks.
10/26/2019
11/11
00:12:04 Learn as much as you can for next time.
00:12:07 I might take another look at this strategy and where we're at and then talk it over with you, if that's OK?
00:12:12 Of course, I'm glad you came and asked for help.
00:12:15 Humility is an important trait in a leader.
00:12:19 Thanks for everything.
00:12:20 I really appreciate it.
00:12:22 You're welcome.
00:12:23 And Kathy, I know you'll find your feet soon.
00:12:27 Be patient.
00:12:36 Across history, leadership has undergone many transformations, from the inspirational orator to the tough minded operator.
00:12:45 The current ideal of a successful leader is one that is less domineering and more in harmony with those around them.
00:12:52 Every leader will bring their own personal style to the role.
00:12:55 But those who are self-aware, flexible, able to acknowledge their own limitations, and understand what drives humans have the best chance, in the long term.
00:13:06 Way to go team.
00:13:09 That's a wrap.
00:13:10 [MUSIC PLAYING]
