The role of Conventions
Originally, the main purpose of political conventions was to nominate the party’s candidate for president. It was a movement to put more political power directly in the hands of the citizens. Prior to this candidates were nominated in secret caucuses by members of congress. Eventually the democratization took the nominating function away from the conventions. People wanted more direct control over their party’s nominee.
What is the Presidential Election Campaign?
The United States of America holds a presidential election every four years and includes both a primary session, and a general election. During the primary session, the two major political parties review the field of candidates through state votes to nominate the party’s candidate for the general election
Political parties serve four key functions in the American political system
Select candidates
Mobilize voters
Facilitate government
Monitor the opposing party when it is in power
The roles that media play in a modern political campaign
Can easily manipulate voters to believe what the network wants them to believe about each candidate.
Media outlets have recently been caught reporting false information about candidates to make them look bad.
During presidential debates the hosts can control the questions being asked causing one candidate to stand out as a winner.
The influence and role of money on a modern political campaign
The more money a candidate has the more exposure they can get.
Corporate backers will have specific topics they want a candidate to have a certain standing on and are willing to provide money towards their campaign if they support this opinion.
Having certain corporate backers will influence voters.
