In a well-written, proofed report that is at least 2 ½-typewritten pages in length, you should summarize the chapter of the book you have been assigned. Your summary should be written as though you are explaining the ideas in the chapter to someone who has never read it. You should select one quote or passage from the chapter that is especially illustrative of the chapter as a whole. That quote should be included in your paper. However, instead of writing out the full quote verbatim, you should merely indicate the page number of the quote and provide the first 4 and last 4 words with an ellipsis in-between. [An example of what this would like is the following: Berger writes on p. 2: “One of these days … the occupations just mentioned.”] Any technical definitions from the chapter should be explained in your own words. You should avoid paraphrasing the chapter. That is, you need to avoid a summary that merely itemizes the contents of the chapter. In other words, I do not want an essay that merely states: “On the first page, Berger discusses ______. One the next page he talks about _____.” You should explain and expound upon the ideas in the chapter, and your paper should be written as a seamless whole. That is, it should therefore hang-together as a cohesive, coherent summary that explains the content of the chapter. Finally, you should write two quiz questions related to the chapter. Those quiz questions should be short, essay-style questions that would require 3-5 sentence responses. You should also provide an answer key.
