*Talking about travelling experiences
*Talking about wishes
*Talking about the activities
Students will be able to make sentences with using the following:
*Wishes (grammar structure would like to )
Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of:
*The activity names in Turkish when encountered in a Reading text.
*The written forms of activity names in Turkish to write about their previous travelling experiences in Turkish.
*The acvity names in a listening track and understanding the language in phone conversations.
*Making a phone call in Turkish and expressing wishes.
Language Standards:
* Students will be able to use a language other than English for communication.
*Students will develop cross-cultural skills and understandings.
Overview: In this unit, students will use their prior knowledge and new knowledge together to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of Turkish under the theme of “tourism”. The major skill that is targeted in this unit is speaking. Therefore, the unit is supported with acvities that aims to focus on “communication” and “pragmatics”. This unit includes phone calls, role-play acvities and listening records. To give the literacy skills to the students, the lessons will also focus on the written forms and pronunciation of the new knowledge. The levels of remember, understand, apply and create of Bloom’s Taxonomy is used in this unit in order to both give students the theoretic and written knowledge and use and apply the knowledge in conversations as the language standard “Students will be able to use a language other than English for communication” requires.
* In “remember” stage students will need to recall the prior knowledge of the target language in order to understand the new knowledge because every new thing they will learn in this unit they will build up on their prior knowledge. To give a specific example, students need to remember greetings, requesting etc.
* In “understand” stage, students will recognize the new knowledge and comprehend and be able to classify with the prior knowledge. To give an example, they will need to know what category the new knowledge fits in the grammatical categories.
*In “apply” stage, students will need to use information in their speaking, writing and listening of the target language. Students will get the information of “ways of transportation” and use it in their phone-calls. Students will learn the pragmatics and general communication that is done for accomodation and use it in the role-play activity.
*In “create” stage, students will develop ideas around the new information they got and construct a writing. They will be asked to gather their prior and new information in their writing.
While aiming to develop discipline specific skills, the unit also includes elements from the target culture such as the activities that are done in the target language speaking country to create a meaningful context and to apply the language standard “Students will develop cross-cultural skills and understandings.”.
Reflection on Planning:
a.Essential questions will create an environment to make students ready to the new knowledge. After the essential questions will be discussed or thought, students will get the new knowledge according to that. The objectives will not be the answer of the essential questions but more like an example or one of the answers to the questions. For example, In what ways can I express myself clearly in a phone conversation? will connect to the objective using Turkish in phone calls or What are the activities that I would like to do in Turkey? Will connect to the learning of the activity names and expressing the wishes in “would like to” form.
b. Since the students will be at the intermediate level of Turkish, they will already know lots of grammar rules, vocabulary items, and basic speaking skills. They should be able to write they hear, understand the speaking person in a certain level. To give an example, they need to know how to use past and present tenses in Turkish in order to learn “would like to” form. They also need to know requesting in Turkish to learn about basic phone calls.
c. The new knowledge is new verbs, nouns, grammar structures in the target language. Transportation vehicle’s names, vocabulary used in air travelling, new verbs related to packing/ travelling, names of accomodation types, idioms/ pragmatic rules to use talking to hotel staff, new verbs & nouns that consists activity names, the grammatical structure “would like to” to express wishes. The new skill is to talk to phone which takes speaking skill to a new level because it lacks eye-contact, body language, gest and mimics.
d. Students will learn about pragmatics which are not usually in the curriculum. They will know how not to be rude talking on the phone or talking the hotel staff. The materials will include answer to their possible answers such as a video from Turkey in which people are in modern clothes because the students will probably consider if there is a dress code they should follow when they go there.
