Abortion refers to the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy. The topic of abortion has been a hot debate topic for a long time due to the moral dilemma surrounding whether to keep or terminate the pregnancy. The important questions around abortion surround whether abortion is morally wrong or whether abortion should be legal or illegal. Abortion has two extreme sides of the debate, where one argues that abortion is wrong and should not be allowed and others who say that abortion should be a matter of choice for the individual. The debate around abortion revolves around whether the fetus should be considered human and the human right to live extended to it. People also question what is more important between the fetus right to live and the freedom of the mother to choose how to lead her life with her body. When the mother's life is in danger because of the pregnancy, it is questioned on whose right should be upheld between the mother and the unborn baby. The opposers of abortion say that the fetus is an innocent human being with rights, and therefore abortion is on an equal level to murder. When the health and safety of the mother are considered, those arguing against abortion allow it to save the life of the mother. One area to research abortion is on the attitudes towards abortion and how our upbringing and different factors in an individual's life affect their attitudes towards abortion (Jelen, 2003).
The research will begin by looking into the topic of abortion to explore the meaning and how it is received in society. The research will take a look into human history with abortion to explore how people have responded to it over time and also the laws and regulations that have been put in place concerning abortion rights. The research will then explore the current situation and responses to the topic of abortion and how much people differ in the various issues with abortion. The study will focus on multiple backgrounds and look into how people from that background respond to the question of abortion. The different backgrounds to look into include religious, secularism, various cultural backgrounds, and personal values. The final part of the research will be concluding and making recommendations for further research (Jelen, 2017).
One of the barriers experienced while researching the topic was the lack of a centralized source of information on the issue. The lack of a central source meant that more time had to be taken to find reliable sources that could give more information on areas of interest. The lack of centralized information source suggested that the topic had not had adequate research conducted about it before. Another barrier when researching the topic of abortion is that it is a sensitive topic for most people, which meant that their personal opinions on the matter would profoundly influence people providing information. Own opinions are often not based on facts by emotional feeling, which may not be an accurate representation of the effects on the ground. There was also limited resources to get substantial base information that would have provided a better conclusion on the area of research. Researching on the topic of abortion has affected my attitude towards abortion as I am more equipped with factual information and arguments from both sides of the debate on the subject. The barriers in the research were overcome by making use of the available resources and sources of information to draw as much information as possible from which conclusions could be made (Jelen, 2017).
