First/Last Name

CE410 - Unit 4 Assignment
Date
Complete the following template on an art center you would design for children. For topics 2–12 you must write in paragraph style, using bullets sparingly.
1. Age/Grade Level of Children (highlight one of the following)
1. Older toddlers, 2–3 years
1. Preschoolers, 3–5 years
1. Young school age children, 5–8 years
1. Number in Group
How many children in class and how many will be allowed in the center at one time?
1. Goals of the center
This is a great place to use research. Age appropriate goals are important. It is also a good place to mention developmentally appropriate and diversity issues in your goals.
1. Placement of the center
Your text gives good insight about this. Where should your art center be? What is it near? Consider noise and distraction and clean up and accessibility for handicapped children.
1. Rules of the center
These should be specific rules needed in the art area. Please remember the age of the children in wording your rules. It should be an age appropriate list you could post on the wall and remind them of as they are in the center. You do not need to list rules for the whole classroom like, “Don’t hit” or “Don’t run.”
1. Specific materials to be used in the center
This should not be too brief. Remember, you are stocking an art center to be used for all kinds of experiments and creative experiences.
1. Storage of materials
Storage is about two things (1) things children can access themselves and (2) things that are put up or away until needed. In other words, things like the large bottles of paint have to be somewhere because only small amounts are put out for use by the children.
1. Placement of materials
This is only about where the materials are placed so the children can access them. Remember children with special needs as well.
1. Maintenance of materials
This will address what will be done, how often, and by whom to maintain the materials in the center.
1. Daily art activities available
These are the activities that children can come into the center every day and participate in during their turn in the art center. Please remember the age group you selected. What kind of supplies could they access on their own and be creative? These are general in nature, and you are NOT writing lesson plans.
1. Weekly activities planned
These are the special activities that go with curriculum themes and holidays/ Discuss a few, but remember the work should still be independent, creative expression activities not a teacher directed lesson plan where all children make something alike. Use your textbook to find some good ideas for the age you choose.
1. Method of assessment
What kind of written record of progress and skills will you have? This is another good place to use research. Many students lose points here because they do not explain how they are going to document the assessment.
Choose four of the topics above that you consider most important for addressing cultural backgrounds, developmental needs, and special needs of children in the art center. Discuss in detail why you chose each of them.
Write a paragraph for each of your choices. Explain in detail why each of the four you chose is a priority and include citations from research.
In all four topics, remember to consider special needs and developmental differences as well as cultural differences when writing about strategies for celebrating diversity.
Many students lose a lot of points because they just write their own thoughts. To get these 30 points, please do the following:
1. Select the 4 topics from 3–12 above; do not make up new topics or find them elsewhere.
1. Use one citation from research for each of the 4 topics.
