4.1 Painting
From Hopper’s Narrative Cinema and Art, most things that could be essential are missing in the art presentation. So much information is left that leaves many people lost in thoughts about what the reasoning for the theme was.
Noticeable is the absence of accuracy and realism. The right hand appears distorted to an extend that it looks bigger than the head of the painter. From a keen observation, this form of distortion could be said to adapt to a defensive posture. A closer look of the portrait shows an individual captured in a deep analysis and in a captive situation.
The way of presentation shows a life lived under some false lie or pretense and whose many elements are highly distorted and largely mutated. In the Self-Portrait of Parmigianino, he looks young and always found great happiness in distorted art. The back of his hand, is abnormally prominent, and largely exaggerated since it has been caught in the distorted glass of the convex mirror into which he is staring.
It looks unusual that a painter can be so well dressed and yet be engaged in painting himself this way. This could explain the bemusement. The story being advanced by this painter-who understands it to be untrue, is that he took it upon himself to do what is considered unusual for him - and therefore the unique expression on the eyes. We are evident that he is doing drawing although we cannot see the tool being used to draw
As we look at the convex mirror, the young man too looks into a convex mirror in a room behind him which appears highly distorted – like the window has bent, and we see a glowing panel on the right side(Smarthistory, 2012)...
4.2 Film
Six Characters in Search of an Author written by Luigi Pirandello represents coming together of art and life of a fixed form and reality. The play is an illusion that man builds so that he convince himself that he can run from the aspects that shape his existence
It represents the differences between illusion and reality where the stage controller tries to make his characters look real and true. This makes them appear to be true and is why the ‘real’ six characters arrive and mock them later on. Characters are not speaking for themselves but so that the audience can hear.
The drama that essentially lacks truth captures six characters that interrupt rehearsal of a paly to ask the Producer to complete some story, on claim that their author did not finish a play he created for them The characters’ plight draws the attention of the producer and the actors and is drawn into their crisis. Conflict in reality emerges as a missing link in this play.
Pirandello uses the features of classical drama to divide the characters and the actors of the play. The real actors know everything concerning the theatre. They pose to be parroting throughout the play. The metaphor used to enlarge the false reality that the dramatis personae are nothing but make-believe, or have a temporal existence. Again, the characters are real as they cannot escape the immutability of reality
The many events surrounding the film show a lack of clarity and realism. More noticeable is that the characters look more authentic than the actors themselves with lots of uncertainty that eventually subverts reality of the film(Ardila, 2011).
