Humanities Assignment 3
Timelines and Chronology
UNIT 3
A timeline is a way of organizing the past, using years in a manner similar to the way a mathematical number line uses numbers. The Romans organized their calendar (continued in Europe) based on the approximate year of the birth of Christ, with years after his birth designated “anno Domini” (in the year of the Lord, abbreviated A.D.), and with years before his birth referred to as “before Christ” (abbreviated B.C.). Instead of the designations B.C. and A.D., some modern books use “before the Common Era,” abbreviated “B.C.E.,” and “Common Era,” abbreviated “C.E. ” A timeline is also called a chronology. _____ B.C. / A.D. _____
