Assignment Details
A draft of your Analytic and Holistic Rubrics is due at the end of the unit. Your instructor has set up groups in the Team Area portion of the course. Go to your group’s forum and attach your Analytic and Holistic Rubrics draft to your post. You will comment on your group members’ drafts in Unit 3.
This Assignment addresses the following unit learning outcome:
Devise rubrics that effectively assess student learning.
It also addresses the following course outcome:
ED531-3: Design assessment devices for multiple learning experiences.
Analytic and Holistic Rubrics Assignment
For this Assignment, you will need to create one analytic and one holistic scoring rubric for an assignment that you plan to teach. Refer to the Grading Rubrics under Course Home for your grading rubric for this Assignment. Before you begin, you need to understand the design process. There are several types of scoring rubrics, but a majority of rubrics will be either analytic or holistic. In Chapter 12, Nitko and Brookhart (2011) explain rubrics in more detail.
Analytic Rubric Development
According to Nitko and Brookhart (2011), “An analytic scoring rubric (also called scoring key, point scale, or trait scale) requires you to evaluate specific dimension, traits, or elements of a student’s response.” An analytic rubric will score each criterion individually which will allow the teacher to perform diagnostic evaluation of student learning. However, it does take a longer time to score with this type of rubric.
There are three steps to create an analytic scoring rubric:
Step 1: Develop Criteria
Step 2: Develop Performance Rating
Step 3: Develop Descriptions – Develop a written description that describes the level of performance needed for each criteria identified.
In general, an analytic scoring rubric will be presented in the format of a table with the criteria (Step 1: Develop Criteria) for the student work listed in the first column and level of student performance (Step 2: Develop Student Performance) in the second column. (See below for an example). The center of the table will provide specific descriptions (Step 3: Develop Descriptions) of what the criteria look like for each level of performance:

Holistic Rubric Development
According to Nitko and Brookhart (2011), “A holistic scoring rubric (also called global, sorting, or rating) requires you to make a judgment about the overall quality of each student’s response.” Ultimately, all criteria are evaluated at the same time.
There are three steps to create an analytic scoring rubric.
Step 1: Develop Criteria
Step 2: Develop Performance Rating
Step 3: Develop Description – Develop a written description that describes the level of performance needed for each criteria identified.
A holistic rubric is easier to develop, in general, since all criteria are evaluated at the same time. (Below is a template for a holistic scoring rubric).

For this Assignment, develop one analytic and one holistic rubric for an assignment you plan to teach. Above each rubric you have designed, write a short summary of the actual assignment used for creating the analytic and holistic rubrics. You will submit your rubrics for peer review before turning in a final draft. Follow this schedule:
- Unit 2: Submit a draft of your rubrics to your group discussion thread in the Team Area portion of the course. Submission of the draft is worth 20 points.
- Unit 3: You and your peers will review each other’s drafts and offer critical and substantial comments for improvement. This Peer Review is worth 50 points.
- Unit 4: Submit final draft of your rubrics to the Dropbox. Be sure to incorporate your peers’ and instructor’s feedback. The final draft will be worth 100 points.
