Unit I Assignment: Conceptual Experiment Worksheet
A college student named Nova walked 500 meters for 500 seconds from her dormitory building to find her favorite bench in a park. She called her mom and talked for 100 seconds at the bench, but suddenly she remembered that she did not turn off the gas stove. So, she returned her dorm by running for 100 seconds. To find out Nova’s average velocity for each case while walking, resting, and running, begin by plotting a graph between position and time. Please be aware that the walking mode is a positive direction and the running mode is a negative direction of Nova’s motion.
Complete the Graph: The graph below will show you Nova’s distance from her dormitory building at a given time. Click the right cursor in the graphic area, and click on “Edit Data,” then select “Edit Data” or “Edit Data in Excel.” The time column is given to you. Enter the data in the distance column by reading the description shown above. The outcome will be shown in the graph. (20 points)

6. Order her running, resting, and walking modes from greatest to least by speed. (10 points)
7. If there are two straight lines with different slopes in the distance and time graph, do you think the speeds of the motions are the same or different? If they are different, how are they different and why do you think so? Your response should be at least 50 words in length. (10 points)
8. If the slope in the position versus time graph is a curved line as shown in the figure below, what can you tell about the motion? Your response should be at least 50 words in length. (10 points)
