Feedback to Learner

Hi Student. Thank you for submitting our second writing assignment in the class. On this assignment, you earned a grade of F (54%). As I hope you know, I would like to see you earn an A on all of your assignments. I encourage you to use this feedback and the information I shared in the Writing Workshop to understand what you did well and what may need some improvement. Each rubric criterion is addressed to give you specific actions to take into the next assignment.

The first grading rubric criterion required that you choose 2 segments of the general environment that would rank highest in their influence on your selected corporation and assess the effect those 2 segments have on both your corporation and the industry in which it operates. Table 2.1 in our textbook provides an outline of the segments of the general environment discussed in the course. While there are numerous business-impacting factors, being able to identify and focus efforts on the areas that are most significant is a key part of strategy. You did a thorough job in identifying the 2, of the 7 segments described in the textbook, that you believe have the greatest influence on your corporation and in assessing the segment's impact on the corporation and industry.

In the second rubric criterion we assessed the 5 forces of competition described in the text. Figure 2.2 in our textbook displays the 5 forces of competition discussed in the course. You needed to choose the 2 forces you think are the most significant to your selected corporation and evaluate how well the corporation has addressed those forces in the recent past. Although you were only asked to assess 2 of the forces, remember that a consideration of all 5 forces leads to long-term profitability. Note that full credit is earned when each requirement is thoroughly addressed with substantive responses that fully display your understanding of the concepts. Focus on using your course resources and providing well-thought out responses.

Knowing your competitive forces is one thing but knowing what you might do to address those forces is critical to business success. The third rubric criterion continued the evaluation of the 2 forces of competition selected in the previous criterion. In this criterion, you needed to predict what your selected company might do to improve its ability to address the forces in the near future. A full-credit response here provides sound and relevant predictions of what the company could do in the short term. Be sure to develop responses that address the specific rubric requirement in a way that fully displays your understanding.

The fourth rubric criterion gave you a chance to assess your selected company's external threats and opportunities and give a justified opinion on how the company should deal with the most serious threat and greatest opportunity. A thorough assessment of the threats and opportunities was needed along with a fully developed and justified opinion of what the company should do. You did a great job addressing this rubric criterion Jasim.

Our fifth grading rubric criterion included 4 sub-requirements. You were asked to give your opinion on your selected company's greatest strengths and most significant weaknesses, then choose a strategy or tactic they could use to take advantage of their strengths and a strategy or tactic to fix their weakness. At this stage in your academic study, I'm sure you understand the foundational purpose of assessing strengths and weaknesses. Taking time early in the strategy-making process to assess strengths and weaknesses helps to ensure a balanced approach to achieving long-term success. A fully developed response to this criterion includes all 4 of these sub-requirements and provides a thorough justification for your choices. Your response was partially complete. In order to improve, focus on depth and thoroughness. When assessing a company's strengths, weaknesses, and strategies, think of the level of detail and information you would want to know as an investor.

In the sixth rubric criterion you needed to determine your company's resources, capabilities, and core competencies. A deep-dive into who and what the company is made of is often one of the first steps in strategy formulation. A fully developed response here provides a thorough determination. Your determination was insufficient. It's always important to focus on depth and substance in your writing assignments so that key points are not missed.

Thank you for exceeding the minimum required quality references.

There were several errors in the clarity, writing mechanics and format requirements rubric criterion. Writing is an area in which we can all improve. Be sure to take full advantage of the writing resources available in the Virtual Writing Center.

I trust that this feedback was beneficial and answered any questions you may have about your grade Jasim. If you have any questions or concerns not answered here, please email me at alethia.gardner@strayer.edu. I'm here to help. Thanks, Dr. Gardner
