Fake news is unreliable information from an uncredited source. It is created and spread for the sole purpose of
misleading and misinforming the public. This often happens to generate profits off of its advertising of it. You can determine which information sources are reliable and which ones are not by checking the credibility of the website. In the article, it states that a credible website will not have a “.co” instead will have your regular .com. Another thing you should look out for is the author of the information. You cannot just rely on your average Joe to give you your facts on topics based on personal opinion or credibility. If you come across several typos and grammatical mistakes this could be a red flag along with headlines that are emotionally charged. The best way we can spot misleading or false news is first by considering the source, reading beyond meaning to analyze the headline. Find out about the author and their previous works if any. Double-check to see if they have supporting sources to back them up. And always remember to verify when it was written. We can use ABC’s also known as evaluation criteria for evaluating the reliability of websites. This means we must first do our research on the author. Find out if the author is even considered an expert on the topic that they are sharing. Linking the author to some type of company or organization can be a step closer to validating their work. Amongst many other things, I found it rather helpful to compare it with other sources and get a general idea about all of the information that is out there about the topic.

Fake News purposely tries to deceive its readers or viewers into believing a false story. These news outlets use various tactics
to attract more viewers usually to peak more interest in the story. A most common tactic seen throughout social media is “click-bait” these websites create an absurd-sounding headline to generate more clicks to their article which can benefit them in many ways. These fake articles have especially boomed during the rise of social media now that the news is not just main newspapers but now anyone in the world can create them. Determining sources that are reliable is our responsibility as the audience. Using different methods such as looking at the domain or searching the author and their previous works can reveal if they had spent time researching their topics. Many academic articles will state a code of ethics they follow to remain objective and remove bias from their articles. If the author provides citations and links where their sources are from the website is most likely reliable. However, if an article is anonymous and has many grammar mistakes, it most likely is a hoax. Fake news can be easy to spot however, some might need to be inspected more closely because websites are modeled to look like other credible news sources. If a headline sounds as if there is an extreme emotion behind it, it is most likely biased. Emotional manipulation causes a reaction from the reader removing the objectivity that needs to be used when researching. There are many websites that have already done this work for you, however, asking yourself these questions can help you easily figure out if an article is telling the truth.
