CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS IN FORENSIC INTERVIEWING AND EVALUATION

Cultural factors can significantly influence the interpretation of data obtained from interviews and evaluations and subsequent conclusions and recommendations. As a result, mental health practitioners are tasked with understanding how culture might impact the interview and evaluation process.
However, it is unlikely that a mental health practitioner can be knowledgeable about all cultures, and the specific cultural factors that will affect the interview and evaluation process. In addition, a mental health practitioner of one culture could have difficulty understanding the nuances in the language and behavior of another culture, and this results in misinterpretations and distortions of thinking.
Given these challenges, do you think a person of one culture can effectively evaluate someone from another culture?

To prepare for this Discussion:
Read the American Psychological Association (APA) Specialty Guidelines. Read Barrett’s article containing suggested guidelines for cross-cultural evaluations. Read the chapter by Garg, Dattilio, and Miazzo which addresses transcultural considerations. Suppose that you are a mental health practitioner and you have been asked to interview or evaluate someone from a different culture within a forensic setting. This will be the first time that you have evaluated someone from a culture other than your own, and you are questioning how effective your evaluation will be. Consider how culture will play a role in your strategy and methodology. In addition, think about the preparation methods you should employ prior to the evaluation.
Post your response to the following:
Identify one specific forensic context in which you might be called to interview or evaluate an individual from another culture. Provide 2–3 ways that you can prepare yourself to meet the judge’s order to interview/evaluate. Describe what goals your interview/evaluation will have. Discuss how these goals might differ from the goals of an interview/evaluation in a clinical context. Keeping your above responses in mind, select a specific culture different than your own, and provide examples of cultural considerations that might impact the interview and evaluation process within the specific forensic context you selected. Briefly discuss whether you believe a person from one culture can effectively evaluate someone from another culture.
