Tips for Getting a Good Grades on Your High Performing Work Teams Analysis

Hello everyone,

Since discussion participation is not graded this week, some of you may not be monitoring our classroom.  So, I’m sending this message with tips for getting a good grade on your High Performing Work Team (HPWT) Analysis due on Sunday, September 30.  The HPWT assignment is your first opportunity to demonstrate that you can apply concepts and theories from the class to a real-life situation.  Before you upload your assignment, make sure you’ve done the following:

1. Review the assignment instructions to make sure you understand all requirements. Then review the grading criteria and the rubric on pp. 4-5 of the assignment instructions to make sure you understand how I will grade your work.

1. Cite class readings and videos as well as sources from other HRMD and MGMT classes or from your own research to support your opinions and statements.  Give brief definitions of concepts and theories you include in your paper and cite the source(s) of your information.  A good rule of thumb to follow is “if in doubt, give a citation.”  Failing to give credit to the source(s) of your information is sloppy scholarship at best and could rise to the level of plagiarism, so please be careful.

1. Make sure your writing is clear and concise. Good writing takes time and editing.  If possible, create a draft, let it sit for a day (or overnight), then come back with fresh eyes to do your final edits.  Don't be afraid or embarrassed to use the services of the graduate writing tutors, which you can access via the Writing Tutoring module in our classroom.

1. Double check the formats of your citations, references, and quotations.  I’ve posted a Sample Reference List in the Course Content area that gives examples of the APA format for many of the types of references you will be using in this class.  The document also includes instructions on how to create a hanging indent for references.

1. Proofread your paper carefully, or ask a significant other to proofread it for you, looking for spelling and grammar errors.

1. Make sure that the paper you upload to your Assignment Folder is the correct version.  I have to grade what is posted in the folder, so please don't upload a draft.

1. If life happens and you experience an unexpected business, health, or personal emergency that's beyond your control, please contact me before 11:59 ET on Sunday to ask about an extension.  Depending on the circumstances, I may be able to grant an extension, but I can't do anything if the deadline has passed.  You can read more about the late policy in our Syllabus, in the BAM Departmental Policies section.

Don’t forget to read the Week 3 reading materials.  Although there is no required discussion participation this week, you are still responsible for learning the Week 3 content related to team performance.  You may wish to cite some of the material in your HPWT analysis.

Once you finish your paper, check out the article I posted in the HR in the News forum.  It poses the question do you think it’s HR’s job to create an ethical culture?  As we saw in the barn-raising scene from Witness, having a common culture and shared values can enhance team work.  And behaving in an ethical manner can ward off team dilemmas such as the information asymmetry dilemma we discussed in Week 1.  But who is responsible for creating a culture that values ethical behavior?  The article presents two views: (1) it’s HR’s responsibility and (2) it’s not HR’s responsibility.  What’s your view?
