The thyroid gland is the gland that controls your metabolism. It is described as a butterfly shaped mass in front of the neck just below the Adams apple (Melissa Conrad Stöppler, 2019). The Thyroid controls your metabolism with iodine to produce hormones. Thyroxine is the main hormone that the Thyroid produces. There are various Thyroid disorders which can be controlled through medication and or surgery.

Hypothyroidism is when the Thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones. Symptoms of this condition are fatigue, depression, weight gain, high cholesterol among others. Hyperthyroidism is the opposite. It when the Thyroid produces too many hormones. This disease is called Graves’ disease. This can cause your metabolism to speed up. Other symptoms consist of rapid weight loss, anxiety, constant sweating, increased appetite and an accelerated heart rate. While most people would say that would they would love be able to eat all they want and not gain weight. Its actually very deadly. I’ve seen hyperthyroidism debilitate a friend of mine. She went from a solid healthy weight of 145 pounds standing a 5’8 to 105 in a few months with any physical activity. She was practically withering away. Through medication this condition can be controlled. There is no cure…

Thyroid nodules are lumps in the Thyroid. These lumps can be cysts that cancerous or non-cancerous. These cysts can grow and cause issues to other parts of the throat. These cysts have hundreds of cells and its very difficult to determine if it’s cancerous I personally had a golf ball sized cyst attached to my Thyroid. It was removed along with half of my thyroid and thankfully it was benign. Being that half my Thyroid was removed my hormone levels remain sufficient and no medication needed. Thyroid Cancer occurs more in adult women than men. People that suffer from Thyroid cancer have a high survival rate when diagnosed in early stages. Through normal routine examinations by your primary doctor can keep you aware of any conditions.
