Thread: Inside Llewyn Davis--Parts Two & Three

1) Caden!!

Going into the second and third part of the film, I was very excited to see how the story developed. Pretty early on into the second part, I noticed something interesting that I touched on in the discussion post before this. At the coffee shop with Jean, Jean is going off on Llewyn again calling him a loser and other rude names. She proceeds to blame him once again for them sleeping together, but we all know that it was equally her fault for the situation that they are in. What i found important in the second half was the scene in the doctor's office. The doctor starts talking to Llewellyn like he knows he has a baby with another women. The doctor tells Llewyn no charge for the abortion since the last one failed like Llewellyn knew, but he did not!  Llewyn just found out from the doctor has a two year old son. Now the meaningful part was the one that caught me off guard. When he was already not wanting to sing at the  Gorfein's dinner, Elizabeth Gorfein started to sing Mike's part of the song. This set Llewyn off in a blind rage snapping at Elizabeth and making her cry. Not much of Mike is mentioned, and this was the first time you see how important Mike was to Llewyn.

Now when i finished the movie i was thrown for a loop. I found interesting that the movie came back to the beginning. After all that story line, Llewyn was just where he was before, the movie ended how it started. What I thought was important was also at the end. They had Bob Dylan play at the Gaslight, which Llewyn considered a bad gig. We all know that Bob Dylan is one of the most successful musical artist ever to grace the earth. Also, Llewyn was yelling how he hated folk music and so did everyone else, but Bob Dylan became famous off of it. Earlier in the film, through all the of the gritty story, i noticed something meaningful and sweet. When Llewyn played his father his favorite song, it was the only time his father showed any expression. His father looked through the window and showed he processed the song playing. As soon as it was done he went back to how he was before. It was a sweet movie to me. Overall i like the grittiness to the movie and thought it was very interesting. 

2)Kelci !!

After watching this film, I've noticed that Llewyn is constantly met with one failure after another as he tries to gain some traction as a commercial artist. During this entire film, one thing that stood out to me is the beginning and end of the movie because they are the same scene. The way I viewed the man's attack at the beginning of the film is widely different from how I viewed him at the end of the film. In the beginning, I felt sorry for Llewyn as he was getting attacked but since I was provided with more insight into the situation, my sympathy for him wore off after the man mentioned it was his wife he was talking about. 

At the Gorfein's home, Llewyn loses his cool when Mrs. Gorfein attempts to sing Mike's part of the song. I understand that Llewyn is lost without Mike, but I wonder what it would have sounded like if he would have let her sing. She wanted to sing for the sake of remembering him but Llewyn stopped her before she could celebrate the life of their mutual friend. Llewyn has trapped himself in an impossible state of mourning that it's hard for him to appreciate the intentions of those trying to celebrate Mike.
