Assignment:
Select and thoroughly research one important environmental problem or issue
associated with either energy or pollution. Parenthesis indicates minimum pages or
slide see rubric for more info.
Write a research paper and PPT that covers:
1. Defines the problem (1/2 -1pg Introduction with a thesis statement)(1 slide)
2. Discusses the cause, source, and scope of the problem (1pg) (2 slides)
3. Presents a case study (example of the problem, copy cut paste cite 4-6 pages)

4. Identifies the key issues and dilemmas associated with the problem (1pg) (2
slides)
5. Analyzes possible solutions to alleviate the problem(1pg) (2 slides)
6. Conclusions and consequences for continuing present course of action(1pg) (2
slides)
7. Recommends a future course of action for local communities. (1pg) (2 slides
The research paper must include graphics that will better illustrate the dimensions of
the problem. Extra credit will be given for students who construct a working model
that demonstrates a portion of the research.
Students will be expected to submit a PPT/slideshow and written report of their
research during the second to last week of class.
Problem: Example
Two important issues will continue to significantly impact life on Earth during your
lifetime: energy and pollution. Chapters 17, and 18 in your textbook define and
explain alternative energy sources and analyze our energy consumption. Chapters 7,
8, 10, 11, 12 and 16 discuss various types of pollution and their sources. It is
unrealistic to believe that students may become expert in all the different aspects of
these two environmental issues during this course. However, individual research
focusing on one specific environmental problem or concern may provide a
framework for understanding similar or related problems in the future.
