In this current generation, it seems the freedom of speech continues to expand. The constitution offers freedom of speech, and this why many people are out to express themselves however they want. One privilege with freedom of speech is that people can express themselves for change. Freedom of speech allows for democracy. It gives people a voice who otherwise did not have any. However, freedom of speech comes with its limitations. For instance, there seems to be a troubling rise of speech that advocates violence and hate (Childs, 2019). People tend to misuse freedom of speech allowances.

According to Darling-Hammond (2019), there are implications that result from the school practices that institutions of higher learning adopt. That is why they must come up with processes that ensure the students have their right to freedom of speech as well as manage their process of discipline. Higher institutions try to manage communication effectively. Managing communication enables students have the knowledge, skills, and dispositions concerning their freedom of speech. These institutions also do communication planning. This to help allow students exercise their freedom of speech while allowing the institution exercise their discipline appropriately. Internal communication, which also allows for feedback from students has helped a lot.

The way higher institutions conduct themselves is different, and their practices are different. This is mainly because their mission, vision, and values are different. This implies that each of these institutions is working towards a goal, but their goals are different. The way each institution handles the freedom of speech of students depends on its mission, vision, and values. Also, the processes each institution lays down to handle their students and discipline differ.
