Summary of weekly Activities of Week 2 term 3

Tuesday, January 17, 2023, was my first day to Hope Harbour. I met with my agency director which is Yulanda Fryer; She works in the Legal office for Hope Harbour. Mrs. Fryer and I got a chance to go over paperwork in tevera and signed off on it. Once we were all done, she led me to the shelter. Mrs. Fryer gave me a tour of the shelter and everyone who works in there. Due to me coming in the evening, I didn’t get a chance to meet all the case managers and child advocates. I did get a chance to meet with one of the shelters advocates, Kierra, she is one of the main people I will be with during my internship. I did not do much on my first day because Mrs. Fryer and I spent three hours filling out of my paperwork. I did meet some of the residents that were staying at the shelter

On January 18, 2023, I got a chance to be with Kierra and watch her do an intake with a client by the name of Alexia. Alexia was a young adult, and it just was very sad to see people go through domestic violence. During the intake they make the clients sign paperwork for legal reasons and for them to acknowledge the policies and rules set in place for the shelter. During the intake, the client is asked a lot of questions about their abuser, finances, where they are fleeing from, etc. I do thing the intake process is very important and interesting. The remainder of the week was slow. I did get a chance to do room checks and assign chores to the residents. We also put together bags to welcome any clients to the shelters. The internship itself is great; this week was a very positive week starting off. I can say I did learn a lot about domestic violence this week. I never knew men fac domestic violence as much as women. I also learned that domestic violence can also be from a family member or close friend. Learning these things really make me look at the topic of domestic violence differently and want to start more awareness for men who suffer from domestic violence.

Values and Ethical Practice

The intake process plays a big role in values and ethical practice as serving people in need. The advocate was asking questions to find out everything the client need to help the client and build their self-esteem back up after they get away from their abuser.

Week activities of week 3 of term 3

Monday (1/23) through Wednesday (1/25) I got a chance to do case management learning with Latosha Powers, who is the outreach advocate here at Hope Harbour. I was able to do hands on case management training and I was able to shadow Mrs. Powers. Mrs. Powers work with the rapid program clients and outreach clients. Rapid clients are the clients that are coming from the shelter, and they are in the 12-month lease payment program and they all must follow certain guidelines. Rapid clients are of course still in the program but not in need of shelter assistance. The outreach clients are clients who don’t want shelter assistance, but they would still the same benefits as the other clients, if needed. Outreach clients don’t have restriction like rapid clients; case management is mandatory for rapid clients. We also went over victim compensation. Victim compensation is the direct payment of compensation to a victim for a cost associated with the crime, such as medical bills or lost wages. Each state has a program that provides money to those who have been the victims of violent crimes like sexual assault.

On Monday, January 23, it was more of an education training with Latosha and I. We went over the intake packet for clients. The intake is the initial meeting between a case manager and a new client. The intake can be virtual or in person, whichever one is best for the client; the intake packet is an overall background to introduce to what’s going on with the client. I did get a chance to watch Mrs. Powers do intakes with about three clients that day. Mrs. Powers was very welcoming to each client and made great conversation with them. She is very flexible with meeting with the clients and show great empathy to each client.

On Tuesday, January 24, Mrs. Powers started letting me speak with her clients for their monthly one-on-one and intake packets. We had to travel to one of her rapid clients’ homes for a home visit. All rapid client requires a home visit either in person or virtual, which consist of the client going room to room to make sure the home is up to date and making sure nobody else is living with the client. The clients are not allowed to let anyone else stay with them while in the rapid program. The remainder of the day consist of intakes and monthly one-on-ones with clients.

On Wednesday, January 25, I was able to assist in the monthly one-on-one with the rapid clients. During the monthly CM meeting, I would ask the client what’s going on in their life and reflect on last month meeting. I would check in with their goals, employment, and education, if they are attending. I would ask the client their new goals for the month and give motivating words. Latosha and I went over the Individual service plan (ISP) and client action plan (CAP). ISP is a written description of the resources, activities, and supports needed for a person to attain their own goals. CAP explains what the client and the housing counseling agency (HCA) will do to accomplish the client's housing goals and, where necessary, deals with the client's housing issues. I had to match the client’s goals with an action plan for them. It was broken into four different actions the client would take to meet to reach their monthly goal.

The remainder of the week, I was in the shelter with the shelter advocates assisting the residents. I help the ladies with any inconveniences they had and gave them the paperwork from their case manager for the week. I did room checks and answered the phone for the crisis hotline.

Values and Ethical Practice

This week I was able to talk to different women. It was some ladies that weren’t willing to give their abuser’s name and file a temporary protective order (TPO) against their abuser; I couldn’t do anything but respect the client’s decision and keep moving forward with the intake process. As a social worker, treating clients in a caring and respectful way is very important, even when you did not agree with their decisions.

Critical Thinking and Professional Knowledge

I utilized my critical thinking skills by creating client action plans for the client’s goals. I created a step-by-step guideline for each client to achieve their goal. Latosha and I both worked together to think about how we can help this client reach their goal and provide them with the appropriate resources. The intake packets helped me engage in knowledge guided practices because I was able to communicate with different people. I learn that everyone is not the same when it comes to making decision so respecting the client’s decision are very important in case management.

Week activities of week 4 term 3

Monday 1/30 and Friday 2/3, I was able to get back with the outreach advocate Latosha Powers. On Monday 1/30, I was able to meet with two clients so they could share a success story. The success story included details of the back story of the abuse and problems the clients faced during this progress, the solution to the problems, and results that were gained after solving the problem and deciding to work with Hope Harbour. The clients are also asked about their experience and how they would rate the services that were giving to them. The stories the women shared were very emotional and it is so sad to know they went through that trauma trying to get away from their abuser. Both women had children that had to start therapy due to the abuse that was happening. I did nothing but give those ladies motivating, encouraging words because they were very brave to leave their abuser. On Friday 2/3, I did one monthly one-on-one with a client, and it was pretty fast; we didn’t discuss much or anything new. I also did a client action plan for the client’s goals. I met with each client to discuss new goals or past goals from last month and just an update on their life. I also was able to enter some notes in this web browser call case worthy where all client information goes after talking to their advocate.

Tuesday-Wednesday (1/31-2/2), I was working with a shelter advocate, Kierra Wells. I got a chance to be on the crisis hotline by myself and assist potential residents. With the shelter being at full capacity, I didn’t get a chance to admit someone into the shelter. I did speak with different people and refer them to different shelter in their local area. I also was assisting the residents with anything they may need like a trash bag, pen, cups, etc. They keep all supplies in the office so the resident do not abuse the items and use them all up at once. We also must enter in the computer everything we give a resident or their child anything, which is very interesting.

Values and Ethical Practice

A value that was implemented in week 4 was Dignity and Worth of the Person. When I spoke with the women regarding their success story, I was sure to show empathy and make sure they knew I cared about them as a person. I respected every decision they had to make while facing the abuse and advised how brave they are for their children.

Critical Thinking and Professional Knowledge

I utilized my critical thinking skills by creating client action plans for the client’s goals and to also ask the ladies the correct questions during the success story. I don’t want to be the person who ask the wrong things and offend someone, so I had to think of positive great questions to ask these ladies. I had to do some research one the perfect questions to ask and research for resources the clients needed for their goals.

Week activities of week 5 term 3

On Monday 2/6, I was working with the outreach advocate, Latosha Powers. Monday was a busy day; I had to worked with a rapid client who admitted in the shelter on Saturday 2/4. She told me that she had been drugged and abused; she was very emotionally and drowsy during her intake; I did report to Latosha of the client’s actions during her intake. This client did have a past of using but I didn’t try to accuse her lying. I tried to comfort her the best way I could and tell her how everything will be okay and reminded her how after every storm, there is always sunlight. She unfortunately got removed from the rapid program because her abuser refuses to leave the home she was placed in; the client is not allowed to let people stay with them while in the rapid program. The client was very upset about the terrible news which made her even more emotion.

On Tuesday 2/7, I did a couple of intakes and success stories for Latosha’s clients. The success stories are always interesting and emotional because to know what these ladies faces during their abuse is very sad. I got a chance to do a success story with a young lady who was from Jamaica; she shared a lot about her culture and how she transitions from being in Jamaica and coming to the United States. Her husband is the reason why she came into the US, and he was unfortunately her abuser also. She told her how he was trying to control her life and constantly threating her that she will go back to Jamaica. I gave both of the ladies motivating words after they shared their stores and reminded them how strong they are to get away from their abusers.

On Wednesday 2/8, I worked with Latosha again. We got a chance to do a victim compensation, but the client did not come prepared at all. We started the application with the client but since she didn’t have the appropriate documents, we couldn’t finish. The client did share what was going on in her life, so Latosha and I went ahead and did her monthly one-on-one sine we already had her with us.

The remainder of the week, I was in the shelter with the shelter advocate, Kierra Wells. I helped around the shelter when it was needed like making the rooms for the new clients, answering the crisis hotline, or assisting the residents of their needs. I was also shadowing Kierra while she was adding new client information in this web browser called case worthy. Case Worthy is what Hope Harbour uses to store client’s information in. I also had a resident come to me in tears because she was dealing with postpartum depression and anxiety. I gave her as many tips as I could but when I got home, I did more research and was about to find her resources for her postpartum because I also deal with anxiety so I knew I could help with that.

Values and Ethical Practice

A value that was implemented in week 5 was service. I felt like I act as a social worker this week and found the perfect resources for the client facing postpartum depression and anxiety. I had asked her how everything was going later in the week, and she told her my tips helped her in a great way.

Critical Thinking and Professional Knowledge

I utilized my critical thinking skills this week by identifying the problems, gather research or data and present the information to the clients with their monthly one-on-ones or in their Individual service plans. Some professional knowledge I learned this week is trying to not assume or accuse because that can be very unethical.

Week activities of week 6 term 3

Monday-Friday (2/13-2/17), I was in the shelter with the shelter Advocate, Kierra Wells. Unfortunately, the outreach advocate, Latosha Powers, was out on Monday and I was out of town Tuesday and Wednesday, so I didn’t get a chance to work with her the remainder of the week. I had a couple of interaction with clients this week.

During the days in the shelter, I honestly did the same stuff as in answer the crisis hotline, assisting the residents as needed, and enter client information in case worthy. Kierra did do a couple of intakes on Monday 2/13 and Thursday 2/16; as she did the intakes, I enter the client information in case worthy. On Monday, It was on client who advised me she wanted to leave the shelter because “the energy in the shelter was throwing her off.” I couldn’t force her to stay so I advised Kierra as such, and she did an exit intake. During the intake, the client seemed very irritable and was eager to finish quickly. It was also a client that I have been noticing that as for medication a lot for her daughter but I honestly don’t think the medicine be for her daughter so I reported it to the shelter advocate so she can notice the pattern also.

On Thursday 2/16, I had a chance to do group with the ladies. During group, we made rotel and had snacks like popcorn & chips. We also had R&B playing for music for the ladies. We had a chance to talk and let out any feelings of they ladies had. I also gave the ladies advice on the different topics we were discussing. On Friday 2/17, I had to take one of the clients to her son’s grandmother house and it was very interesting ride. She is twenty years old, so it was very easy for me and her to connect with each other. I did try to set boundaries between us because I notice she always come to me about everything. I do want her to feel like she had someone, but I don’t want the client to get so comfortable with me.

Values and Ethical Practice

A value that was implemented in week 6 was integrity, competence, and service. I notice this week I did have to set boundaries with a client, and I want things between her and I to continue to be strictly professional. I believe these three core values shows up everyday while coming to the shelter. I give service the best way I can to these ladies. I do feel as I do follow the code of ethics buy making the appropriate reports and setting boundaries.

Critical Thinking and Professional Knowledge

I utilized my critical thinking skills this week by thinking of ways to set boundaries. I am so bad with setting boundaries with people and this weekend I had thought and research different ways to set boundaries.

Week activities of week 7 term 3

On Monday (2/20)-Wednesday, I was working with the outreach advocate, Latosha Powers. We met with a handful of clients and did monthly one-on-ones. Latosha’s clients are starting to transition into getting comfortable with talking to me. I have only known these ladies for a month now and they seem to open up perfectly fine with me. I try to be as welcoming and motivating as possible to the clients. I also was able to do virtual home visits and in person home visits. I can honestly say I do not feel comfortable going to client’s homes in person, I would rather do it virtually. I feel as I am risking my safety going into DV victim’s homes; you never really know what people have going on in their life and it can be more intense than some. I am sure Latosha is used to doing home visits in person so doing home visits in person is something you would have to transition into. I did express to Latosha how I felt about the home visits, and she respected my opinion of it and saw my point of view.

On Tuesday (2/21), I was speaking with a client for her monthly one-on-one and one of her monthly goals was to stay motivated. I advised this client that I would send her inspirational podcast to keep her going and she loved the idea. I spoke with another client that mention she was taking a midterm for school and needed it some better study skills. I advised the client that I will do some research and put together a study plan for her. On Wednesday (2/22), I did a couple of safety plans on the web browser for 2 clients. With the safety plan, the website prompts the clients an idea of what do when in a DV situation as in code words and putting emergency contacts in the wallet. I don’t honestly feel as the ladies got anything out of the safety plan so I will do some research for the next couple of weeks for a safety plan.

On Friday (2/24), I was working with the shelter advocate Kierra Wells with assisting the residents in the shelter and also entering information in case worthy as needed. It is like 4 or 5 interns at the shelter, so we take turns with the crisis hotline.

Values and Ethical Practice

A value that was implemented in week 7 was Importance of Human Relationships, Social Justice, and Dignity and Worth of the Person. I do feel I make the clients feel like I care about them as a person, and they have someone to confide in. With me making sure the clients get all the necessity needs like a employment, resources for their social security, etc, I fill in social justice. I always respect everyone as a person and make them feel normal and not a victim.

Critical Thinking and Professional Knowledge

I utilized my critical thinking skills this week by doing research for a client to stay motivated. I found her podcast and I also gave some key notes on how to stay motivated. I feel as a lot of research have been done for week 7. Thinking how to assistance people with other things are not as easy as I thought so doing research always helps.

Week activities of week 8 term 3

This week was a very long week for me due to us wrapping up term 3. I came to the to the shelter Monday 2/27 till Saturday 3/4. Monday 2/27, Tuesday 2/28, and Saturday 3/4, I was with the outreach advocate Latosha Powers. Latosha trust me with her clients so I pretty much do things alone after she tells me what is in store for the day. This week was full of monthly one-on-ones and home visits; we were very business this week. Some of her clients were missing their CM meetings and two of them got exited from the outreach services due to them not meeting within the required times for a third time. One of the ladies that is an rapid client didn’t get a rent paid for the month due to her not meeting with us. One of the clients had an international driver’s license and wanted to get an US license. I did some research for her regarding of such and the client just needed proof of her identity, residential address, and US citizenship. I also did research for client looking for state paid daycare services and I found CAPS. A certain group of families is qualified to receive financial aid to offset the expense of childcare. The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning's (DECAL) Childcare and Parent Services (CAPS) program assists parents in finding childcare so they can go to job, school, or training courses. On Saturday 3/4, Latosha and I organized many of the clients folders and updated their information in case worthy.

On Wednesday 3/1, Thursday 3/2, and Friday 3/3, I assisted in the shelter with the shelter advocate, Kierra Wells. The shelter is basically the same task which is assisting the residents of their needs, answering the hotline calls, and setting rooms for new clients.

Values and Ethical Practice

A value that was implemented in week 8 was service and social justice. With me assisting the international client, it serves as social justice because she should to be able to drive just like everyone else in the US. With me helping her and doing the proper research for her to get her license, I implemented service as a social worker. My primary goal is to help all the clients in need.

Critical Thinking and Professional Knowledge

I utilized my critical thinking skills this week by doing research for a client to get a united states license. I want her to be able to live like she is a human being and not having to be tied down to different things than others. I also was putting together different ways the clients can reach any goals they had for the month.

Week activities of week 9 term 3

On Sunday (3/5) and Tuesday (3/7), I was doing a lot of case management. I was fixing files, updating documentation in case worthy and calling clients to see if they feel they reach there goals that were set for the outreach advocate, Latosha Powers.I am so glad she trust me with her clients and know I will get the job done when it is not present. On Monday (3/6) and Wednesday (3/8), I was doing a few intakes and monthly 1:1s with the clients and it went great as always. I am very hands on with pretty much everything I do with Latosha and I am happy she believes I can handle it all on my own.

On Thursday (3/9), I was in the shelter for most of the day. I started off doing case management for one of the other case manager, Marquilla. I got a chance to do two success stories for her current clients that were residents in the shelter; those two ladies stories were great! It was very intense for both of them and I always feel so bad they went through what they went through. I also got chance to bring some donations to the ladies and I felt really great about that.

Values and Ethical Practice

A value that was implemented in week 9 was Integrity. Before I made donations to the residents, made sure that it was okay with the shelter advocate first. I always want to make sure I am not breaking the code of ethics.

Critical Thinking and Professional Knowledge

I utilized my critical thinking skills this week by me thinking of ways to make sure Latosha’s clients met their goals or meet their goals. Latosha gave me a outline of what to say to the ladies during the CM meetings but I felt as we didn’t ask if they feel like they met their goals from last month. I was thinking of ways to make it easier for the clients the best I could
