Chap 1: List and discuss the Five stages of a crisis
1.Detection- This is when a company initiates a prodromal stage where an organization see a crisis develop in its industry and takes measures to prevent it from happening to their organization as well. Examples of these cases are the Tylenol tampering case and Exxon Valdez disaster resulting in changes in industry policy. (Fearn- Banks, 2011, p. 5)
2. Prevention/Preparation- Prevention is a proactive measure that can be taken before a crisis occurs. An example might be PR manager showing a news reporter that a story he is going to run is baseless thus preventing a crisis. (p. 7). Preparation- This is an effort to draw everyone involved in a crisis to exist as one collective brain. This creates an organized functional system which helps everyone know who, where, when and what their role is in a crisis situation. (p. 7)
3. Containment- This refers to limiting crises so it does not spread further. An example I would use would be something like containing a swine flu patient so they cannot pass on their condition to others. This would be how public health officials would contain the situation that has created the crisis.
4. Recovery – This would be the attempt of an organization to return to business as usual. (p. 8) An example of this could be the BP oil spill on the gulf coast a few years ago. They paid for a lot of commercials to entice people to return and vacation on the gulf coast.
5. Learning- This is a step which might involve analyzing what caused the crises and how the crisis was handled. It also might look at ways an organization may improve on the handling of such a crisis in the future.
Chap 2: Discuss the Excellence Theory of Crisis Communication
The excellence theory was formed by the studies of J. Grunig and Hunt in 1984 and later expanded by J. Grunig and L. Grunig in 1995. The theory is based on four models, with model four being the best and model one being the worst possible expectation. (Fearn-Banks, 2011, 20) The theory generally evaluates how effective certain public relations methods are managed.
Model 1 is a type of communication in which public relations want their products to be recognized. Public relations marketers may use partial truths or usage of words to sway the target of their communication to consume or buy into their products.
Model 2 is a Public Information model that says truth is the most important value in the public relations message it is trying to relate to its primary receiver. Model 3 is called the Two-Way Asymmetric Model or (Scientific Persuasion Model) , the sender of a message uses polls or survey s to persuade the receiver of a message to do what is asked of them.
Model 4 is called the Two –Way Symmetric Model or (Mutual Understanding Model) , this is considered to be the ideal public relations model as it simply uses an intermediary such as an assigned spokesperson to relate to a mass audience of receivers a simple to understand and generic message.
