Stimulants have risks, but what about leaving ADHD untreated?

Students often write about the dangers of using stimulants to treat ADHD. To be a little of the Devil's advocate here, what are the risks of not treating ADHD?

According to Psychologist Ari Tuckman, for example, leaving ADHD untreated can lead to issues including “Doing badly in school, having social struggles, greater substance use, more car accidents, less likely to attend and then graduate college. For adults, untreated ADHD also affects job performance and lifetime earnings, marital satisfaction, and likelihood of divorce.”

Sometimes people wonder if maybe ADHD is not the root of all the problems a person with ADHD experiences. They also sometimes ask if studies have been made about the possibility of the inter-connected relationship between ADHD and other problems. Yes! There is much research going on regarding these possibilities and there have been for decades. A doctor once told me about a family member that no matter what name we put on a condition with such symptoms (like ADHD, Tourette's Syndrome, Schizophrenia, etc.), they are all inter-related. Here is a recent article from ADDitude magazine titled When it's not just ADHD.

I did some research on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/facts.html) website. I have found the following trends in ADHD. Trend meaning what is popular with ADHD. In my opinion popular subjects within ADHD are symptoms. Examples of a trend ADHD tends to exhibit can include children not being able to do well in school such as fidgeting or unable to focus, unable to make and keep friends, and not being able to function in society.  More information I found online to further support the trends ADHD exhibits comes from the Fox News website where there is an article about children with ADHD (Kids With ADHD, Families, Face Emotional Problems | Fox News). This article suggests that children with ADHD also experience lower self-esteem than children who do not have ADHD and the more ADHD symptoms a child has the lower quality of life was likely to be in their lives.

One trend I found affecting us today is the use of social media to bring awareness to Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specifically TikTok. The article discusses the use of TikTok and evaluates if the pros outway the cons when providing awareness. The primary con of the article was individuals sharing personal experiences and advice without citing credible sources or having medical degrees. Another disadvantage of using Tiktok to spread awareness is individuals self-diagnosing or misdiagnosing versus seeking guidance from a medical professional. The one pro in the article said the trend heavily was bringing ADHD to light and having individuals reach out for help. Despite the downfall of multiple cons, the author views the trend as beneficial for spreading awareness of ADHD.
