Your second homework writing assignment will be a synthesis paper, which is described using a more familiar name. A comparison and contrast paper is just what it says it is. You must work from two of the assigned stories or two of the assigned articles. That would be the normal match, but it would not be impossible to write a synthesis paper using a story and an article. It is still a type of analytical paper but it also involves some synthesis in that you must merge your focused analysis of the two items into a single paper. It can be approached looking at the same aspects that you would look at in a response paper. The best things to work from in a comparison and contrast papers are elements like theme, setting, character, style, tone or symbols, but any aspect of a two stories may be compared and contrasted. In articles you still have style and tone, but purpose would substitute for theme. The time periods of the articles might be considered or the intended audiences. Some aspects of a story or article are just more involved and lend themselves to give you something to work with. Aspects of a story are what I referred to in class as common elements of the story that occur in most stories, those being character, setting, theme, symbolism, point of view, tone and style. When you look at style you are examining the author’s use diction and syntax. As to author’s style this holds true for articles also but common elements of an article will vary from those of a story, as noted above. As with all of your homework written assignments, it must be done in an MLA format. For an example of this see Rules for Writers pages 517-525. Every line must be double spaced with one-inch margins, the exception being the upper right-hand header for your page number. Your header on the upper left hand side starts at your one-inch margin and must contain the examples’ information on those four lines and in that order. It must be done manually. Be certain to turn off the MSWord default setting that I went over in class. Failure to conform to these guidelines on any point will result in a full grade point deduction. Make your best effort to conform to the ESWE guidelines that were noted on the first homework assignment’s rubric. I have not noted these things on your papers for the same errors to be repeated.
