The Rise of Workplace Spying

The Week Staff posted an article named “The rise of workplace spying”. The article mentions that most companies monitor their employees. They can do it legally. On one hand, they also track private services of the employees. According to the American Management Association says that at least 66 percent of U.S. companies monitor their employees, 45 percent log keystrokes, and 43 percent track employee emails. On the other hand, some companies track employee google history to check that if employees should be searching for a new job. However, most employees could not stop this tracking, and most of them agree with tracking, but some of them not. Some shipping companies such as UPS track delivery trucks with GPS, and they can see where the truck is and how fast it is. Some grocery stores also track cashier that how fast he scans the items. Most companies monitor employees through software, and the software automatically scans employees’ text messages, emails and google histories. According to the American Management Association that most employees fire from their job for misusing office email and internet. A growing number of companies are using technology to monitor their employees' emails, phone calls, and movements. I disagree with the article that employees are being tracked by companies, and I discuss with these points.

Firstly, the companies can monitor the emails and internet browser history, also they can log private services such as Gmail, Facebook and Twitter. I strongly disagree with this point of the article, because it also shows some private information of the employees and customers. The employees also have conversation with customers, or they have customer information in the emails, and the companies violate customers’ information without permission. On the other hand, the employees can emergency search such as medicine or private health care on the office computer, and the bosses see them directly. It can affect to the employees directly. However, this kind of searches relate companies if the employees have a serious health problem, and they can discuss it easily when the employees need a day off, but it also violates employee privacy.

Secondly, Henry Ford says that Bosses have always kept a close eye on employees and I also disagree with that because the employees always need to feel comfortable without any stress. The employees always need time to improve themselves, and they need to feel free to work at office. The bosses get hire someone to spy employees’ families and family lives, but it is all for figuring out of problems that effected their jobs. It can be helpful, but It also can violate family relationship, because they are not work at that time and that is their own property.

Finally, I disagree with the article that most companies search employees Google history to check that if employees are quitting and they are searching the jobs, because they can find a new job if they want. However, if they have contract, they are in trouble, but if don’t they might leave if they are not feeling OK with company. The companies need to be transparent and honest to them, otherwise, the employees might be leaving the company if the bosses track their web history or try to follow them about their leaving.

In conclusion, the article mentions that most companies track their workers without any permission. I disagree with the article because spying employee might be affecting employee in bad ways such as depressing and leaving job. In my opinion, monitoring employee can be violate customer’s information too, because employees have conversation with customers through emails, and that means the companies also track employees’ emails. Most companies spy their workers home lives too, and It disturbs their own property. I strongly disagree with the article that spying employees is inadmissible.
