Summary

Chronic pain is a long-lasting pain for cancer survivors who require long-term opioid therapy according to Bollig (2019). The article aims to find out how palliative care providers manage chronic pain on cancer survivors authorized to long—term opioid therapy. The research used an online survey to recruit palliative care providers who answered the opioid misuse behaviors, management approaches, barriers to treatment, addiction treatment, and application of opioid mitigation tools.

The study involved 157 participants, where 15% were nurse practitioners, and the rest were physicians. The study found out that 82% of the participants were prescribers of opioids. 71%,85%, and 94% used urine drug tests and practitioner-based programs, respectively. 4% of the participants had never used risk-mitigating tools, 53% responded that they spent more than 30 minutes to manage the misuse of opioid by the patients such as overdose and marijuana use, only 5% spent more than two hours per day. Only 13% had certificates to prescribe buprenorphine, while 36% reported that they had no access. 82% of the participants were aware of the guideline to administer opioids.

The study discovered that most of the nurse practitioners and physicians were well experienced in administering opioids. There were palliative care teams and complementary expertise among the participants. However, there was inadequate local expertise to deal with addiction treatment as stated in the MMWR (2019). I want to say that the research only involved white people as the participants from academic medical centers, hence making it bias. I want to recommend that education on addiction treatment be made available to health care workers. This empowerment will boost their confidence in managing chronic pains, making them more reliable and effective according to WHO (2020).
