Study Skills Checklist Assignment Instructions

In order to further ensure that you have access to tools that will assist your success in this and other college courses, the Psychology Discipline is requiring that you do a Study Skills paper after you have taken the first exam. This project is intended to help you analyze your approach to studying, identify ways to improve your learning, and help you better prepare for exams. This particular checklist will focus on seven different areas of possible concern: time scheduling, concentration, listening & note taking, reading comprehension, testing & exams, reading speed, and writing skills.

Here’s what you’ll need to do: 1. Go to the following Virginia Tech website:

http://ucc.vt.edu/academic_support/study_skills_information/study_skills_checklist.html

2. COPY and SAVE to your computer the Study Skills Checklist (e.g., save as a Microsoft Word document).

3. Complete the 21 item checklist, self-score it, and resave the completed checklist to your computer (be sure to save the document where it can be later found because the actual checklist will need to be submitted as part of the completed assignment).

4. Write a minimum 1-page paper discussing what the study skills checklist assessment identified as areas of concern for you. Specifically, --identify each of the seven areas that were deemed problematic; --address possible reasons for these areas of concern; --identify at least 1 recommendation provided for each area noted and discuss how you

will implement the recommendations for future success in our course — (Note: The recommendations or "suggestions" to which students will need to refer when completing the written part of the assignment can be found by clicking the plus sign (+) at the end of the "Explore" bar located toward the top of the Study Skills Assessment website page.)

--If the checklist results showed no identified areas of concern, reflect on the study strategies you used for the first exam. Are there any ways you can think of to improve how you studied to learn the material? Write your paper on the changes (if any) you will use as you move forward in our course. If there are no changes, outline the strategies you used and why you feel they worked well for you.

NOTE: This assignment does NOT require a cover/title page, nor does it need to be written in APA format. As this is not a research paper but merely an assessment of your individual personal skills, you MAY use first person (i.e., “I”) throughout the writing of your paper.

As an additional reminder, your paper MUST be at least one FULL page in length and can either be single or double-spaced. You must also remember to attach a copy of the actual assessment either included as part of your paper (before or after the written portion), or attached as a separate file via the assignment link.

Please see grading rubric below for specific grading elements.

The following rubric will be used to score your assignment:
