4. Is it possible that the world is moving towards a “global imagined community” with anti-racism protests spreading all across the world with the help of the digital technologies?

Study Questions:

1. Discuss the power of (and lack thereof) MNCs vis a vis the nation-states and civil society. Illustrate your answer with examples.

2. Discuss the role of the post WWII institutions such as IMF and WB within the current global context of neoliberalism.

3. What is Land-grabbing? How is it facilitated by the World Bank?

4. What are TRIMs and TRIPs? How are they benefiting the developed countries of the Global North as the expense of the interests of the developing and less developed countries in the Global South? Explain with examples.

Study Questions:

1. How do fast fashion companies operate globally to make and sell products through global ‘ supply, commodity and value chains’ and ‘ production networks’ ? What does the fast fashion industry tell us about global inequalities within and between nation-states? Which regions of the world are more likely to suffer injustices caused by the fast fashion industry, and why?

2. What does ‘ race to the bottom mean? How does the fast fashion industry operate with ‘race to the bottom’? What are the dominant labor practices used by the fast fashion industry? Who are the local, national and international actors that are and should be involved in regulating the labor practices , raising awareness about labor exploitation and holding companies responsible for labor and child labor exploitation?

3. What are the environmental consequences and cost of the fast fashion industry? Can environmental sustainability be achieved in the fast fashion industry? What are some of the issues and challenges with the so-called ‘green’ solutions implemented by the companies? Who are the responsible actors for the environmental damage given by production and consumption of fast fashion? How can they be held responsible for their negligence or lack of policy response?

4. The consumer behavior expert Micheal Solomon says “It’s not just about clothing, it’s about a disposable society”. What is a disposable society? What is the relationship between fast fashion and disposable consumption society? What can the public and civil society do at the local, national and transnational levels to change the world for better?

Study Questions:

1. What kind of new era is Anthropocene? Discuss how a) Industrial revolution, dependency on fossil fuels and industrial/military technologies, b) European/Western exploitation of the Global South, and c) Consumerism and consumption culture have contributed to environmental degradation, exploitation of nature and dispossession of local communities in the world since the 19th century until present days.

2. Discuss the relationship between the international human rights movement and the international environmental movement. Do you see a potential for positive change in social movements and activism for the rights of human beings and the protection of the environment?
