Summary of Practicum Leadership Course

On reflection on my learning in this course, Nursing Leadership, we covered AACN DNP Essentials:

Essential I: Scientific Underpinnings for Practice.

Essential II: Organizational and  Systems  Leadership for  Quality  Improvement and Systems Thinking.

Essential III: Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods for Evidence-Based Practice.

Essential IV: Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Transformation of Health Care.

Essential V: Health Care Policy for Advocacy in Health Care.

Essential VI: Interprofessional Collaboration for Improving Patient and Population Health Outcomes.

Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving the Nation’s Health.

Essential VIII: Advanced Nursing Practice

The first highlight was the Executive Summary Report done during Module 1 with a Cultural Competence Self-Assessment tool to identify distinctive attributes of a specific group to provide access, effective communication between patient and provider, and ensure appropriate treatment. This particular assignment directly applied to my DNP project because my clinic practice setting is culturally diverse due to different ethnicities and cultural groups. Therefore there is a need for implementation of this strategy.

The second highlight was the Rapid Cycle Improvement Plan. According to DNP Essential IV, technology is key to patient-centered, efficient, and safe care. This essential is directly involved with the delivery of system information required for the safe and efficient delivery of excellent healthcare.  The technology delivery is directly related to my DNP project because data will be electronically obtained from EHR, hence the need to collect data completely, correctly, and accurately to have a feasible data collection analysis. Haneuse et al. (2021) argue that incomplete data collection leads to erroneous results. Thus, adopting pertinent guidelines and data collection will increase the change of integrity in the Quality Improvement project. Furthermore, data collection for my project will be done via NextGen EHR, hence the need to have an optimum EHR system.

According to Hall & Russel (2020), evidence-based practice (EBP) improves patient care and outcomes. Therefore, professional organizations provide continuing education and conferences for nurses to complete and attend to provide information regarding EBP.  For example, on October 3-6, 2021, I virtually participated in the Ryan White National Conference. This conference discussed the many updates, including the antiretroviral therapy for treating and maintaining viral suppression on HIV-positive patients. In addition, the results of anal cancer screening results from the Anchor study done here in Miami were presented as well, showing that removing HSIL with electrocautery significantly reduced the rates of progression to anal cancer compared to active monitoring without treatment. Such results and information are particularly relevant to my DNP project since it will be focused on STI screening and treatment based on the implementation of the CDC STI guideline.

Many applications of my learning from this course applied to clinical practice, but at least three very different applications were utilized.  First, I collaborated with the interdisciplinary team by developing new knowledge and disseminating the best EBP applicable to nursing leadership by applying the culture assessment tool. Second, I was able to act as an advocate by writing a letter to an official requesting a solution that would benefit many people collectively. Third, I can maintain the identity of the nursing profession by demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of healthcare consumers, primarily because my clinical host site is located in the Miami suburbs, which has a resource-constrained environment and serves a high-risk population.

Leadership Practicum Summary:  In this course, we understood how a DNP-prepared nurse plays a role in a leadership position within a facility.  Throughout this course, we completed several projects and discussions utilizing DNP Essentials (Moran et al., 2014) such as:

· DNP Essential I - Scientific Underpinnings for Practice.

· DNP Essential II - Organizational and Systems  Leadership for  Quality  Improvement and Systems Thinking.

· DNP Essential III - Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods for Evidence-Based Practice.

· DNP Essential IV - Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Transformation of Health Care.

· DNP Essential V - Health Care Policy for Advocacy in Health Care.

· DNP Essential VI - Interprofessional Collaboration for Improving Patient and Population Health Outcomes.

· DNP Essential VII - Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving the Nation’s Health.

· DNP Essential VIII - Advanced Nursing Practice

We worked on a few assignments that challenged us to utilize several components of the DNP Essentials listed above during this course.  Namely, some of the notable projects we completed were:

· Module 3 consisted of working on a rapid cycle improvement plan (RCI) regarding using technology in the medical field. We had the opportunity to collaborate with other professionals within the hospital setting to work on solutions that will improve any technology issues that nurses often encounter in the work setting.

· Module 4 consisted of working on an Executive Summary dealing with any problem of interest; however, we were to consult what local, state, regional, national, or global entities could do to assist with the issues being addressed. This assignment allowed us to research what/how larger entities could do to help solve the problem in the work setting.

· Module 6 consisted of writing a letter to an elected official within our district to address any concerns within the nursing profession. This assignment provided us the ability to think of any problems within our work setting to address critically.  The project also allowed us to utilize our leadership skills and collaboration skills with our P.M. as we completed this assignment.

I learned about three applications within this course that I will utilize within my practice or DNP project: collaboration, different leadership styles, and critical appraisal of project implementations.  This course required a lot of collaboration with other department leaders to ensure the successful implementation of the planned project.  Our projects during this course required us to collaborate with executive leadership teams, which proved that everyone has differing leadership styles (Chism, 2019).  Lastly, on every project that we worked on during this course, we had to utilize a critical appraisal of the research we conducted to ensure a smooth implementation of our planned project.
