Introduction – Main Page

I. Attention-getting statement: "We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back"-Malala Yousafzai

II. Thesis statement –The purpose of my website is to advocate for women’s rights and to share awareness about issues regarding gender inequality in the workforce. The main goal is to fight in order to close the wage gap that has long been persistent in the United States.

III. Preview statement – I will start by discussing the income difference between men and women in America. I will continue, by pointing out the importance age plays in this gender discrimination. Finally, I will point out some important facts that everyone should be aware of, regarding the gender bias in the workforce. I provide, a video of Barack Obama, discussing the importance of acting towards fighting this inequality and giving women the same opportunities men are given in the workforce. Following that I provide I “call to action”, with different types of solutions in order to help our movement. Finally, I use two websites as resources in order to provide more material in regard to the gender income gap.

Body of Presentation

First main point Women have made tremendous strides to bridge the pay gap, nonetheless, they still earn 80% of what men earn.

Sub point: The wage gap has remained even though there have been numerous legislations in order to overcome employment inequality; such as the passage of the Equal Pay Act in 1963 and the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009. Women even today are not receiving equal pay for equal work.

B. Sub point: The gender inequality varies depending on the age group.

1. Sub-sub point: Younger women between 20-24 years old are payed 90% of what men are payed however this gap becomes wider for older women, who get payed 73.7% of what men get payed. On average a woman working full time will lose "$418,800 over a 40-year period in wages" because of this income gap. Hence, women will need to work 10 additional years to catch up to their male counterparts.

2. Sub-sub: point: The gender gap also varies depending on the state: For example, New York City, where women who worked full time were paid 89% of what man were. Whereas, the biggest wage gap was recorded in Louisiana where women were paid 70% of what men were paid.

II. Second main point: There are some very important facts regarding pay equity.

Sub point:

· Native American women have to work an extra 9 months, just to catch up to what white men earned in 2017

· According to the Shriver Report released in 2014, women earn annually 77 cents for every $1.00 men earn.

· In 1963, women where paid 59 cents for every $1.00 men earned. That year the Equal Pay Act was passed, which mean that it took "44 years for the wage gap to narrow 18 cents, which is less than half a penny a year." Thus, efforts of bridging the wage gap have slowed down.

· San Francisco currently has the biggest wage gap out of any big city for Black Women.

· Many women experience the "motherhood penalty” which means that mothers trying to return to the workforce experience child wage penalty, which results in a pay gap between mothers and non-mothers. This wage gap is even bigger than the one between men and women.

· San Francisco currently has the biggest wage gap out of any big city for Black Women.

· Women median annual earnings is $40,742 compared to $51,212 for men.

Main point C: There are an individual can help in order to make help make progress in ending gender discrimination.

· For Companies: We want to urge companies to conduct salary audits in order to address any gender bias or wage difference that might be apparent inside the organization or firm.

· For Individuals: We want to empower women as well as men to speak up and advocate for gender rights when it comes to salary, benefits, and promotions.

Conclusion

I. Summary - review all of your main points. To conclude although there have been many changed made specifically in the workforce in order to treat women equally, however, there is still a lot of change to be made in order to bridge this wage gap.
