Question.

1. Discuss the subjects of morals, ethics, and the law, pointing out the differences.

2. How does integrity (i.e., acting in a consistent manner according to one’s principles) play a role in that mix?

According to the text reading from Boundless Management(n.d.), ethics is the study of principles relating to right and wrong conduct (Boundless Management, n.d.). They are kind of yardstick that measures our behavior.  Moral is described as “the good,” “doing good,” (Kipke & Rüther(2019).  Whereas Law can be broadly characterized as a codified framework of formal, institutionalized rules that control human society (Greene, 2020).

Looking at the definitions of Ethics, moral, and law. Ethics and morals are pointing more towards knowing and doing what is generally acceptable as good, or right. Law in the other hand is the defined guidelines that governs the safeguard ethics and moral.

Integrity is essential to all three. Someone with integrity usually has good morals, ethics and usually will obey the law.

Morality consists of the values, customs, beliefs, purpose and principles that guide an individual's personal behavior and decision making process. Morals are typically passed on to them through family, community and culture, and is typically something that guides an individual without their knowledge, be it good or bad, and potentially if given the chance to have analyzed it early on would've potentially rejected it (TEC, 2016).  Going a long in life people may even find it hard to adjust to the morals of what is more socially excepted and struggle with going against their own beliefs and values.

Ethics is the study of moral principles that guide a persons behavior and decisions based on personal values and beliefs centered around what is right and what is wrong.    "An ethical decision is one made based on reflection about the things we think are important and that is consistent with those beliefs" (TEC, 2016).

Law is a set of rules and regulations that provides basic enforceable guidelines on behavior for the betterment and functionality of society as a whole.  The law is focused and set on what is allowed and what is punishable.  There is a incorrect belief that following legal obligations makes people ethical, but that is not the case.  Obeying the law can potentially conflict within a person if it directly goes against personal beliefs and values (TEC, 2016).

How does integrity (i.e., acting in a consistent manner according to one’s principles) play a role in that mix?

Integrity means a lot to me.  There have been and I'm sure will be plenty more instances when integrity is involved in my almost 15 years (and counting) Naval career.  To me integrity is having a strong ethical and moral principle, and adhering to them in all aspects of life.  I will say that my integrity before I joined the service vice where I am now are unrecognizable if you were to compare the two.  When joining the military you now have an entirely new set of rules and regulations that you need to follow.  There is a lot to consider, when I was younger, if a friend or a coworker would've skipped a step, or cut a corner, or made some kind of violation I would've turned  a blind eye to it, and thought nothing of it.  As an avionics technician on our fighter jets, if someone were to do that, and I knew about or witnessed it, I would be responsible for what could potentially either break an aircraft, injure personnel, or kill a pilot, so no matter if it was a friend, I won't tolerate that kind of behavior and would do everything in my power to rectify the situation.  What I'm trying to say is that integrity can be both good and bad, and binds together with our own moral compass and ethical beliefs.
