Step 1: open up data file

Step 2: Analyze-Descriptive statistics-frequencies

Step 3: pick the variable from the list and move to the right box: (make sure the “Display frequency

table” is checked.)

Step4: click “statistics” and then from the pop up window pick the following: mean, median, minimum,

maximum, standard deviation (these are the basics items that we call as “descriptive statistics.”)

Step 5: Click “continue” and the pop window will disappear to go back to the previous one:

Step 6: click “Ok,” then you should see the outputs:

Now let’s draw a bar chart for this variable using SPSS: Step 1: Going back to the data file and then

“Graphs-Legacy dialogues-bar chart”

Step 2: by default, it is on the “simple” bar chart button and we’ll go with it. Click “Define.”

Step 3: from the list of available GSS variables in the left column, move your cursor over any variable

you’ll see its GSS variable name in the end in parentheses, pick “suicide1” from the list (please note: if

your variables are already listed in the variable names instead of variable labels, you just pick it from the

list) and move it to “category axis” by clicking the “right arrow”

Click “Ok”

You’ll see the bar chart below:
