The Army definition of leadership is the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization. But what does it mean? I have encountered and experienced different styles of leadership and in my opinion, there were good and bad ones that I learned from. I told myself that I would use those experiences to my advantage in the future. From a young private to a developed Non-commissioned Officer (NCO), I have more understanding of how the Army functions than the younger Soldiers. Now, the question is “Why do I want to be a squad leader?”, simply because I want to have an impact on my Soldiers in a good way. I want to be a teacher. I want my Soldiers to learn, understand and take something that they learned from me to pass on to their future Soldiers. I want them to trust me as their leader; I want them to know and make them feel that I care about them, their well-being and their families. I want to assure them that I would not ask them to do anything dangerous unless it’s for a good reason that is crucial to our unit’s task accomplishment. As a squad leader, I am responsible for my Soldiers. Hence, I want to teach my Soldiers about responsibilities and communication is a big factor in this type of affiliation. I would be challenged to deal with different personalities, but that is okay with me because I am all for challenges. I want to assess my abilities as a leader by testing my Soldiers capabilities on carrying out orders given to them. More importantly, I want them to have enthusiasm in the things that they do for the organization. I want to be proud and I want to have that great feeling of accomplishment when I see that my soldiers are disciplined and committed to the Army values. As a squad leader, I can be a tool for the Army to help shape future leaders of the organization. The Army is led by leaders of character who are good role models, consistently set the example. I want to be that good role model setting great example for my squad that they can emulate.
