For Part 1 of this assignment you will use SPSS to calculate the mean, median, mode, variance and standard deviation of the height and shoesize data collected from prior Research Methods course groups. In addition, you will use SPSS to determine how many standard deviations the average ASCI 670 instructor’s height is from the combined group mean.

Open SPSS spreadsheet

Select the “variable view” tab in the bottom left corner

In the first row, under the “name” column type Partno (for student) In the second row, under the “name” column type “Height”

In the third row, under the “name” column type “Shoesize” Now click on the “Data View” window in the bottom left corner

Enter just the number of the student in the Partno column (e,g., 1,2,3). Put 15 for the Instructor Enter each datum (data point) in an individual cell under the variable you named Partno, Height, and Shoesize

Data are posted in the table below

Now click “Analyze” (written at the very top), then “Descriptive Statistics,” then “Frequency.” Deselect the box that says “Display frequency tables.”

Move “Height” and “Shoesize” that are in the window on the left to the window on the right (this window is titled “Variable(s):”

Now click “Statistics” and select the boxes that say “Mean,” “Median,” “Mode,” “Std. deviation,” and “Variance.”

Click “Continue” then click “OK”

1. Now print out the analyses (or copy and paste) and indicate what the mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and variance are for each variable.

1. Write up the means and standard deviations using proper APA format. Use M for mean and SD for standard deviation.

Now go back to the spreadsheet and select, “Analyze,” then “Descriptive Statistics,” then “Descriptives.” Move “Height” (just for Height and not for Shoesize) that is in the window on the left to the window on the right (this window is titled “Variable(s)” Make sure that the “Save standardized values as variables” box is checked.

Click “Options” then select only the “Mean” box

Click “Continue” then click “OK”

Now go back to the spreadsheet by minimizing the “output” file.

1. Write down the z scores for each corresponding raw score. Now check the z score that corresponds to a raw score of 67 (instructor’s height). Is the instructor’s height above the mean or below the mean?
