Case Study

You are the newly-appointed nurse manager of a medical-surgical unit at Local Hospital. Local’s administrator has requested that the nursing leadership review patient data to describe the current patient mix and identify strategies to improve care for the types of patients admitted to the individual units. Today is very typical of the unit’s census. Open the patient data spreadsheet (found in your module) that has your patient data for today. Use Excel to analyze the data for presentation to the administrator. ( Note: The questions below do not have to be submitted as a separate document. Make a note of your answers because you will use them to describe your population in the PowerPoint later in this module.)

Use Excel functions and formulas to determine:

· What is the mean age of the patients? (whole number using rounding rules of <0.5 is dropped and 0.5 or greater is rounded to the next highest whole number)

· What is the distribution of males and females?

· What percentage of diagnoses do the patients have?

· How many of the patients are on Medicare? (actual number and percentage)

· Using marital status as an indicator of “caregiver present,” determine how many patients have a caregiver at home to help them manage their health problem.

Note: DRG stands for diagnostic related group—reimbursement mechanism

LOS stands for length of stay—key factor in cost of care. You may abbreviate names of DRGs and/or decrease font size if necessary to get the data all on one page.)

DRG and LOS are provided for you in the module.

a) Add a column of data in the Excel spreadsheet with the expected LOS for each DRG.

b) Add a column for the difference between actual LOS and expected LOS.

c) Enter a formula to subtract the actual LOS from the expected LOS to obtain the difference.

d) Total the difference column to determine whether actual patient days are greater or less than total DRG LOS. You will compile this data for a future PowerPoint assignment.

Finally , reformat the Excel spreadsheet so that:

· The column headings are in all capital letters.

· The data in columns A and H are left justified.

· The data in columns C, D, E, and F are centered.

· Page orientation is landscape.

· Columns are adjusted so that all text is visible and will fit on one page with one-inch margins on all sides.

The DRG and LOS information below will be helpful in developing your case study:
