Pythagorean Theorem

Using inverse trig to find an angle

Mini Golf is a game filled with geometry. It is all about angles and forming triangles to get the best shot. This week’s project will be about applying your knowledge of trigonometry to find the best path for each hole in the mini golf course.

For each hole in the mini golf course the best route is outlined.

Example Hole #1: Find the distance the golf ball must travel to reach the hole. Then find the angles of the

triangle used to find the distance.

Solution

Step 1: Create a triangle. Use the best route line as one of the sides of the triangle. (Purple Lines)

Step 2: Find the length of the sides of the triangle that you drew to create the triangle (Red)

To find the 17.32 side length, take 26.32 – 5 – 4 = 17.32

To find the 10 side length, take 17 – 3 – 4 = 10

Step 3: Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance the golf ball must travel. (Light Blue)

The golf ball travels 20 feet to reach the hole.

Step 4: Use the Angle Properties to find the measure of the third angle. (Dark Blue)

The Hole Angle: (the angle between 17.32ft and 20ft)

180° – 90° – 60° = Hole Angle measure

30° = Hole Angle
