If you could give doctoral candidates one tip, what may it be?

The Walden Specialization directors were asked to give you some advice as you start your journey. The following is their counsel for you.

• Get involved in the professional associations within your field and subscribe to a few of the top journals to stay abreast of current news and research in the field.

• The "D" in the degree is for Determination. No matter what happens, keep moving forward! Every step moves you closer to the degree.

• Keep your eye on the diploma—do whatever is necessary to get from here to there.

• I have 2 search strings running on Google Scholar for about 4 years now: • what is an evaluative case study • what is a qualitative Specialization evaluation

These have been goldmines for probably hundreds of articles that I have read — and I saved many.

• Focus on time management. • You need to understand that the pursuit of a doctoral degree requires

dedicated time and discipline. • Get involved. Begin to develop your professional identity with your chosen

field from the very start of your Specialization. Join at least one professional organization and become active in your state and/or local chapter. Find opportunities for service in your chosen field. Attend conferences. Read journals. Start to think about how you can contribute to the field and how you can grow as a scholar practitioner. These activities will add richness, depth, and context to your studies and will help you decide whether the field is right for you.

• We are preparing you for positions that don’t exist today. Technology is changing the way people learn and do business. Be prepared to be challenged in your thinking!

• A major part of the doctoral Specialization is the dissertation or doctoral study. As early as possible (maybe the second quarter) start reading recent dissertations or doctoral studies on topics of interest. Pay attention to the organization, writing style, and content. One a quarter, or every other quarter, will do. The Walden librarian can help locate appropriate documents. Doing this will help to demystify the process and reduce anxiety.

• Start reading about your area of interest right from the beginning of your Specialization. If you don’t have an area of interest, you need to explore immediately what local problems you might want to address.

• Decide on a dissertation topic you are passionate about. • Be excited and invest in your research. • Join the International Reading Association and try to attend a conference. • Watch for conferences of the American Education Research Association. • Stay current with topics in literacy education. • Focus on one aspect of literacy that is your passion and then learn about the

“movers and shakers” in that area. • Do not be wed to every word that you write. • Whatever your interest area, read, read, read, and read some more on the

topic/area of interest. • “Get ready to think outside the box … and be willing to throw the box away.”
