Project – Preamble to the U.S. Constitution

Research and explain the meaning of the five objectives outlined in the Preamble of the United States Constitution, then write a persuasive argument presenting which objective you believe is the most important and why.

Objectives:

1. establish justice

2. insure domestic tranquility

3. provide for the common defense

4. promote the general welfare, and

5. secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity

Project Due Date: March 4, 2021 by 5:00 PM

Project Format (10 points):

· margins: 1-inch on all sides

· orientation: portrait

· font: times new roman, regular, 12 points (no HTML formatting)

· alignment: left (no justification)

· page numbering: on all pages, centered at the bottom

· line spacing: single-space within paragraphs (not 1.15), double-space between paragraphs, indentation: none

· spelling: no errors (i.e., use spelling checker, and also review manually for wrong words)

· grammar: do not be horrible (i.e., use grammar checker set to strictest/most formal level)

Submission Requirements:

All submissions must be electronic, uploaded to eCampus, saved in a format that MS Word or WordPerfect can read directly. If you save as a google doc, please make sure that there are no permissions required to access the file. File names must be: your name (last then first) followed by course and section numbers (e.g., If your name is Bobby Smith, then the file name is: Smith Bobby GOVT 2305-XXXXX)

The U.S. Constitution Preamble:

"We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

2. (25 points): Use at least two credible sources to explain the meaning of each of the five objectives identified in the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution.

3. (25 points): Decide which one of the five stated objectives of the Preamble is most important to you and summarize why in at least one paragraph.

4. (25 points): Summarize one historical example and one current event that illustrates your choice from number two. In addition, state specifically how the examples/events are relevant to the objective you chose.

5. (25 points): Discuss at least two consequences of not including your chosen objective (from number two) in the Preamble.
