The essay will be 6-7 pages and will involve applying the social analytic concepts. This course uses the concepts of stratification, contradiction and reinvention – used to frame the history of Los Angeles and its issues of racial and class (in)equity – to a novel we will read called SOUTHLAND (Nina Revoyr). How does the novel lift up these issues? How are they lifted up by at least three other key readings in the course? What do we gain by putting these styles and modes of understanding into dialogue?
