COMPARING AND CONTRASTING SONGS WITH IDENTICAL THEMES
Songs can be different and at the same time identical. This identical nature of songs and differences arises from the beats, genre, emotion of the song, topic of the song, main theme, instruments used, the person singing, audience od the song and structure of the song.
The beat can be fast or slow in nature. The genre of a song can be pop, R and B, rock, rap and among others. The topic of a song is the main theme of the song. The person sing also determines the nature of a song in terms of gender, age and ethnicity.
On this basis, the two songs, “hero” by Enrique Iglesias and “the vows go unbroken” by Kenny Rodgers can be compared and contrasted. These two songs have love as their genre. They are identical in some ways but also quite different in other ways.
Altitudes in these songs is different. The two songs are contrasting in terms of the status of the relationship. In the song “the vows go unbroken”, already there is an established relationship and the two are in already in love. This is seen the phrase, “and tonight when we kissed”. Kissing here means that the two are already dating of even married.
The other song, “hero” is different from the first one. The two are not yet in love and the singer is proposing for love. The singer seems to have loved the lady but he is not sure if the lady will accept him. This is seen in the phrase, “Would you swear that you'll always be mine?” this is the difference between the two songs where in the song “the vows go unbroken”, love is already in existence but in the song, “hero”, love is being seeked.
Another contrast in the two songs is satisfaction. Though the two songs are intended to the same audience, i.e., ladies, in the song, “the vows go unbroken”, the singer is satisfied with the love. He is comfortable and has a rested heart, “Love, keep and honor - always true to you”. This phrase show a rested heart and contented. This is also seen in the phrase, “You made my life complete”. The singer is contented and complete in terms of love. This shows satisfaction in love.
But in the song, “hero”, the singer shows no surerity if he will get loved. “Would you dance if I asked you to dance?” this phrase show no surerity of being loved. He is not contented since he is yet to be loved. He is also not satisfied with his situation and asks the one he is singing for to answer him immediately.
This is seen in the phrase, “Oh, please tell me this”. In general, the main contrast here is satisfaction. One singer is already I love and enjoying. The other is seeking for love desperately. He is not satisfied.
Though the songs are different in some ways, they are also showing some similarities. The beats and the flow are the same. But one of the main similarities lies on one of the main themes of the songs. They share a common theme of “assurance”. In the song, “the vows go unbroken”, the sing gives assurance to his lover that he will continue loving her. The phrase, “I knew from the first - that for better or worse I'd stand by you all my life” proves this theme of assurance. He means he will love her whatever comes in between them even in bad times.
In the second song, “hero”, the singer also assures the lady he is proposing to that he will love her, stand by her, kiss her and above all be her hero. This is seen in the phrases, “I can be your hero, baby. I can kiss away the pain. I will stand by you forever.” This is giving assurance of love. This is a common theme in both the songs.
There is also the theme of “caring”. Both singers use lyrics that prove their tender care they will give their ladies. For the song, “the vows go unbroken”, the singer declares that he will take of his lady, “- and you still know I do, Love, keep and honor - always true to you”. This show that singer will stay true to his lady which shows that he cares for his lady. In the second song, “hero”, caring is one of the main themes. This is clearly seen in the phrase, “I will stand by you forever.” Standing by his lady forever shows caring he is.
From this essay, the two songs are share some characteristics which shows that they are similar in some aspects and can be used in the same circumstances. This is due to common themes like assurance and caring. The same songs have their own differences which are based on the progress of their relationship, whether proposing or already in relationship. There is also the differences of how satisfied the singer is in the relationship.
This comparison gives a clear picture of how the two song are similar in some ways but different in other aspects. The audience can now listen to the songs individually and get the correct meaning of the phrases used in the two songs.
This comparison matters since its important to derive the right meaning from a song. Without comparisons and contrasts, it is easy to generalize the meanings of the two songs when they are different in a other hidden aspects.
The comparison will help the audience when dedicating these two songs to their lovers in choosing the right song for the specific situation to produce the right impression.
