· Although pedestrians have the right of ways to have others yield to them and the sidewalk is designed to keep them travel safely, many pedestrian crashes and injuries have occurred every year. Even though the United States of America has set up traffic control to ensure an organized flow and safe routes for both pedestrians and vehicles, the number of pedestrian accidents is still growing in general.
· Pedestrians’ safety is an important component of transportation because it can be preventable and predictable. Pedestrian safety strategies can help to reduce the number of injuries from traffic accidents and can help to control the traffic flow.
· Generally, the number of pedestrian injuries has increased over the years, illustrating the lack of pedestrian safety regulations.
· Although the number of pedestrian fatalities has dropped in 2017 compared to 2016, the amount of deaths in 2017 remains high. The pedestrian fatalities of 2017 is 5977 deaths. According to CNBC, an estimated 6227 pedestrians were killed in 2018.
· On average, a pedestrian was killed every 88 minutes in traffic crashes in 2017.
