Article Review; Transformational Leadership

The article "an analysis of the transformational leadership theory" was developed by professor Moradi Korejan, a lecturer in the Department of Accounting and Management from the Islamic Azad Univesity Rasht, Iran and his counterpart Shahbazi, from Department of Agricultural Economics, Sayyed Jamaleddin Asadabadi Univesity, Hamedan, Iran and was published in 15 May 2016. The article describes the various aspects leadership styles with greater gravity being focused on the transformational leadership style, why it’s important in achieving organizational success and performance, features of this style, what are transformative leader’s characteristics and the factors affecting the leadership.

The kind of leadership present in any particular institution is crucial in determining the success of the institution. Demonstration of good leadership is particularly crucial at all level of the organization and those organization with all managers, from high rank to the lowest are put into the task to deliver are more likely to experience great success margin as compared to the ones with the top managers showing their capabilities. Since leadership is all about influencing other people, provoking them to deliver in their work and having them be entirely responsible for the outcomes, there are various ways in which this can be achieved, one of them being the use of transformational leadership styles.

Transformational leadership is a style in which one inspires positive change in those who follow them through the creation of new ideas and perspective regarding the growth and prosperity of the organization. This is achieved by garnering the commitment, passion, and loyalty from the employees and inspiring the members to make fundamental changes in the operation of the company so that they can get prepared and acquire the essential knowledge and skills which will enable them to move in a different direction so as to achieve high-performance levels. A transformational leader inspires, motivates, and encourages, persuade, employs creativity and leads by example in a manner that they explore their abilities in their work. Many researchers suggest transformational leadership management as an effective leadership style as leaders make the employees realize their potential.

Transformational leadership emerges from the social aspects of life, where a person comes together with others and impact each other thereby attaining higher motivation and morality amongst themselves, and this is what makes the leaders grow in the organization. In addition, this type of leaders are in a good relationship with their superiors and inferior employees and in real sense, they help more in value addition than those who use transactional leadership because they usually do extra than what is described in the contract, focus on employees high-level needs and offer mentorship and advice that grow the employees at a personal level. Currently, market dynamics and changes such as market competition and growing businesses are happening at a very high rate than it is anticipated, hence necessitating the employment of transformational leadership so that it can enable the organization to maintain excellent performance in an oscillating and unpredictable environment. This style, when applied as a complement to the other form of leadership makes the organization stand high notch of competitiveness due to the exploitation of creativity of the workers. The other advantage of this style is the need for a totally different system and institutionalization approaches, where the behavior and styles of the managers significantly influence on the kind of needs and awareness of the workers. It is also important on emphasizing on adopting a sustainable behavior model that will modify the member’s reactions and attitudes regarding the organization and its new approaches.

A transformational leader usually poses various unique characteristics; first, they believe in themselves and the ideas they have and what they look at is pushing for the acceptability of the ideas by the vast majority of the organization. The modality of inspiring the others is through the deepest personal values which are justice, honesty, fairness, and honor, which are the ultimate values and are believed to promote harmony and unity among the followers and thus aligning the personal goals and be beliefs with those of the institution. Another important aspect is the inspiration of the heart and mind, influencing them to link perspective with passion and purpose and this enhances rationalization and acceptance of the ideas.

There are various factors that affect transformational leaders as observed by Krojan and Shahbazi. First is the focus of meeting the higher levels of personal needs to drive them toward a positive change. The main aspects of this leadership include idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and personal consideration. Inspirational motivation involves the motivation of the workers to face the challenges and has a perspective of the ability to achieve the goal. Individual consideration, on the other hand, is where the leaders assign duties according to personal capabilities so that they can influence the free flow of ideas and smooth coexistence. While intellectual stimulation refers to provoking creativity through the offering of ideas and imaginations for the venture, idealized influence is the ability to garner support through your behavior.

In conclusion, transformational leadership is the most effective leadership styles in the ever-changing business world. Organizational leadership that considers adopting this leadership as a complement to others stands out to have a competitive advantage against other institutions. Transformational leaders are the people to take any organization to a higher performance level.
