1. Read the attached description of a social movement

 Stonewall Riots

2. Use the course content readings and lectures on social movements (see attachments)

Find examples  in the article  of

convergence theory

contagion theory

emergent norm theory

Relative deprivation theory

New social movements theories

Explain how each example fits theory (you may need to define each theory in order to make connections to how each theory fits your example.

3. Use the value added theory to look at the riot and the social movement that follows the riot

Give examples from the article for each part of the value added theory and explain why the example fits that part of the theory.

Value added perspective of collective behavior is most likely when the following 6 circumstances appear in order

A. structural conduciveness- a state of readiness

B. Structural strain- perceptions of relative deprivation

C. a generalized belief- people recognize problem and see possible solutions

D. precipitating factors- event

E. mobilization for action

F. social control – operates to contain or control police etc

I use this example because it is a textbook case for these theories- if you have trouble ask

3.  Although this article is fairly complete there is something important missing from it. The Stonewall bar was not the only one to be a victim of this type of police behavior. In fact this occurred all over the U.S. It was also not the first place to start a riot in protest. What is remarkable about Stonewall is the riots ability to turn into a social movement. Using framing theory explain why this particular riot may have been more successful at starting a social movement compared to earlier riots.

Please note: In the textbook social institutions chapter there is a convergence theory but that is not the same theory as the social movements converge theory from this week’s readings and class sources.
