Social Science - Sociology Ethical Case Study Assignment
Introduction to Social Work – Ethical Case Studies
Case study 1 - Maria is a social work intern at a high school. She is working with Jake, a 16-year-old student referred by a teacher because of declining grades and frequent absences. During one of their conversations, Jake reveals that he sometimes feels very alone and has thought “things would be easier if he could just disappear,” but also says he would never hurt himself.
Maria is concerned but also wants to maintain Jake’s trust. She knows that confidentiality is important, but she is unsure whether she should inform the school counselor or his parents about his disclosure.
Case study 2 - Jordan, a social worker at a community center, is working with Lisa, a single mother struggling to pay her rent and buy groceries. Lisa openly asks Jordan if he can lend her some money or bring food for her children, “just this once.” Jordan empathizes deeply but is aware of the professional boundary regarding dual relationships and personal assistance.
Case study 3 - Helen is a social worker at a youth shelter. One evening, 15-year-old Sasha discloses that her stepfather hit her. Sasha begs Helen not to tell anyone, fearing she’ll be placed in foster care. Helen knows that mandatory reporting laws require her to inform authorities, but she worries about Sasha’s trust and emotional well-being.
Case study 4 - Andy, a social worker at a rehabilitation center, is supporting Max, who is recovering from addiction. Max decides he wants to leave treatment early, insisting he can manage on his own. Andy believes Max is at high risk of relapse, but also knows that respecting client self-determination is a core social work value.
Case study 5 - Leila is a social worker serving a family from a culture where it is common for older children to leave school early to help support the family business. The parents want Leila’s assistance in facilitating special permission for their 14-year-old to work instead of attending school. Leila’s professional values emphasize the importance of education and child welfare, but she also wants to respect the family's cultural traditions.
Case study 6 – A social worker is providing telehealth counseling to a single mother. During sessions, her young children frequently interrupt, family members occasionally enter the room, and the client appears unable to speak openly because she lacks privacy. The client insists telehealth is her only option due to transportation and childcare barriers. The social worker must decide how to balance confidentiality, client self-determination, effective service delivery, and equitable access to care.
