*Writing Strength:

You are clear on the issue at hand:

The main issue of this discussion is to determine the nature of influence that social media has on my life and that of my children.

This provides sufficient context to the discussion.

Nice work, Mara! *Mara, you requested help with Main Idea/Thesis:

There are areas of discussion that do not align with the specific instructions from the prompt. Check this part:

In actual sense, there is a lot of background information and knowledge that is limited to our use and not those of others, which makes the experience of positives and negatives different to some extent. It also borderline relies on the morality of the individual using social media to gauge their levels of positives and negatives. As such, we need to deal with the difficulties of censorship and denial of information when it comes to specific topics. We also need to deal with the challenges in information dissemination and differences in perspectives before properly deducing the use of social media. This will allow us to gauge the complexities and multiple relationships associated with the use of these services.

This is part of the literature review. But you mainly reflect on the morality of social media. You do not integrate what the sources have to say about it. Take note of this instruction from the prompt: What have you learned from the scholarly sources that have helped you analyze the issue? This is just one of the many questions you can apply in the discussion so that a clear reference to how these scholarly sources aided you.

Which among the sources helped you gain this insight about the morality of the individual using social media? What exactly is stated? How can you integrate what you learned from the sources in this discussion?

You can do this, Mara!

*Mara, you requested help with Content Development:

The reason for this quote is not clear:

“All modern natural languages provide their users with a wide range of intellectual standard words… Understanding how to apply intellectual standard words appropriately to cases is essential to thinking well in every language and to reasoning through all content” (Paul & Elder, 2012).

This quote from the primary source is the only thing that comprises the paragraph, making it unclear why you are citing it at this point. A strong, academic paragraph typically has 5 to 7 sentences to allow proper topic/thought development. So, the readers need to see here the reason why you mention Paul & Elder’s views on intellectual standard words. Remember that you are supposed to discuss what you “learned about the depth and breadth of the issue or problem” in line with this source. So, you need to integrate a discussion on how this correlates with the main issue you state.

What topic/idea about social media is this information from Paul & Elder referring to? What have you learned about social media based on this quote from the source? How can you make the paragraph more comprehensive?

For more on content, you may refer to Lesson 4: Powerful Body Paragraphs .

Use of Resources:

You do not cite sources as needed, Mara, Check this:

I found out there is a rise in cyberbullying and hacking trends that seek to deny others the chance and opportunity to utilize social media.

This is part of your literature review section, and you mention that you found out about the rise in cyberbullying and hacking trends. From which source did you find this information? A literature review tackles what sources discuss about a topic. Citing them in the appropriate parts help establish credibility.

Please note that apart from the author’s last name and the year in publication, we should cite the locator number per APA guidelines. So, if the source used has page or paragraph information, you should also cite the corresponding one.

Check this example in revision:

Playing video games starts to become more dangerous in these times.

With page number:

Playing video games starts to become more dangerous in these times (Davis, 2018, p. 3).

With paragraph number:

Playing video games starts to become more dangerous in these times (Davis, 2018, para. 4).

Social Media Influence

“An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don't." - Anatole France

Social media has become part of our day to day activities. We use it both consciously and at times, unconsciously depending on the nature of the topic that is being analyzed. As such, we tend to think of the essential functions and tenets that define the real quality of thoughts and how they come into fruition. We think about our clothes, the activities we perform, and every process that might require action. Critical thinking is a crucial skill that forms part of everyday decision making and should be improved at all costs.

This is because it allows us to perform unbiased and logical decisions following our interests and ideal goals. It will enable us to receive and assess information and deduce what the subject matter is, among other reasons, and justifications that make such an argument valid. It also allows us to understand whether the information being disseminated is truthful or is false and misrepresenting the facts in question. I cannot recall an occasion that does not require critical analysis or deduction in this modern age due to the vast amount of information available at our disposal regarding any issue or field. This is the dilemma of the use of social media.

Certain elements make critical thinking to be more than a necessary skill. This is because it utilizes various components and procedures to conclude with a logical and sound decision. The first step is the acquisition and analysis of information. This provides the basic knowledge of the message being transmitted in the information. The next step is to reflect upon the information gathered and mirror it in line with our personal beliefs and decisions. It is at this stage that the utilization of creativity and problem solving is utilized to outline concrete arguments. These will then be analyzed and deduced concerning the information obtained, which will then form part of the overall decision. But there is more than meets the mind.

Paul and Elder bring about the perspective of consideration that is given in the school of critical thought and analysis. Their whole argument revolves around these essential functions and is the guidelines that see to it that thinking is approached from a different point of view. In order to arrive at a judgment, a proper analysis of facts and information needs to be done and considered. This is because the nature of topics is seldom shallow and is always complicated as such methods of analysis and thinking need to be implemented for logical deduction to be valid. The discussion follows the school of thought being argued for by Paul and Elder in the process of conducting proper deduction and analysis. The three primary functions that thinking has to recognize are thinking, feeling, and wanting. Every function plays a crucial role in its determination and uses in critical thinking.

All of this will be in line with the use of social media and the impact it has on my day to day activities. We shall discuss the manner and role social media has in our lives and how it has become an integrated part of our networking experience. I have seen both the positive and negative sides of social media and its effects. The manner in which it has created convenience but at a cost. As such, we analyze this relationship with regard to Paul and Elder's discussions on intellectual standards of the use of information and thoughts. The paper also highlights and discussed the impact that social media has on my children and how it has influenced their ability to think for themselves for the better or, the worse. In conclusion, we shall have seen and determined whether social media has a positive or negative influence on my life and how this affects my children in their thought process.

Intellectual Standards

The main issue of this discussion is to determine the nature of influence that social media has on my life and that of my children. This is because social media is daily becoming integrated and a crucial part of our day to day lives. It allows for ease of social interaction and the spread of information across various individuals’ platforms, depending on the topic of discussion. It has become an extension of business practices and markets as such, essentially becoming digital marketplaces. It is also a great tool for information and knowledge gathering due to the crowdsourcing of information contributed by others.

This includes new topics and previously unknown subjects. It is also an avenue for social justice and promotion of beliefs and values that are seen as necessary to communities while at the same time providing job opportunities for the unemployed. The uniqueness of its beneficial contributions is the reason why social media has become a force that should be adequately deducted and analyzed when it is being used. This is because social media has become a crucial part of our lives that was previously non-existence and, therefore, requires much more scrutiny to decide the benefits it brings to an individual’s life.

[You talk generally about social media here. There are no specific references to how it is relevant to you, your kids, and your community. Since you have specific prompts to address, you need address as such.]

“All modern natural languages provide their users with a wide range of intellectual standard words… Understanding how to apply intellectual standard words appropriately to cases is essential to thinking well in every language and to reasoning through all content” (Paul & Elder, 2012).

Therefore, we need to understand the relationship between concepts and word use to deduce our thought process accurately. This involves the application of these standards to create a clear role and image in the mind of the scholar in order for them to understand the information they are determining. In essence, social media needs to be thought of through these intellectual standards in order to see the benefits that it brings in the life of a scholar. Therefore, these standards allow us to reason and understand any content that we come across in the vast field of information that is social media. These standards need to be internalized and normalized in the process of rational thought of a scholar in order for ease of deduction of any topic of discussion.

Self-Reflection

This week’s topic discusses the importance of putting what you think down on paper. It initially seems like an easy task from the onset but it usually entails a lot of qualities in order to be able to write down accurately what I think. I have been struggling to analyze and rationalize my thoughts on how I can make this any easier and honestly discuss my thoughts without it feeling superficial as social media is a powerful development in our society. Thinking on paper is more than writing but the ability to collect and narrate in such a manner that truly depicts reflections. One of those qualities is that I have to be open and honest about almost every detail that occurs in my ordinary life.

This is one of the assumptions that I brought with me when beginning a discussion of this subject. Social media allows us to interact with others genuinely; therefore, this created a bias of the positive dialogues exchanged over these sites. I have come to learn of the negatives that social media has on our lives in the form of abuse and exploitation of those open and honest interactions. This is why emphasis needs to be made on the importance of intellectual standards of thoughts and how they can be applied.

Proper use can lead to the avoidance of these negative aspects of social media from influencing lives and communities. This requires a lot of effort to keep up in this fast-paced world, and, at times, a moment might seem like a blur when being recalled due to their brief and fleeting experiences. Being honest about every interaction, even those that are unpleasant, is what it takes to be able to put it down correctly. On top of being honest, it requires hawk-eyed observation to be able to recall and relate to the experiences and make them live in writing.

At the end of the day, the question that remains to be answered is, what is the meaning of all this effort? It means that thoughts should not be left to go and should be noted down for future reference and even to get the gist of what is happening. Concepts of fairness and relevance, coupled with intellectual traits of confidence in reason, are at work, and it means that every thought that crosses your mind is part and parcel of the person. There should be an effort to put it down for the reasons above and even more. The value of understanding this is it allows for monitoring the kind of thoughts that are always crossing the mind of an individual. It says a lot about how one can understand what they interact with and get information about. This is important in instances like decision making and bargaining for value when it comes to various relations and transactions. It might go against my investigations as it will allow bias in terms of deduction and analysis to be utilized when the obvious is visible.

Literature Review

Fairmindedness is associated with the justifiable deduction of information on a topic of discussion. There are guidelines to ensure that the thought process utilized is genuinely useful in the deduction of information and procedures not required by a scholar. The scholarly sources used in the justification of this study assist in this by providing the various levels of evidence that the purpose of ensuring that thought is guided in the most intelligent way possible. It helped by giving the context of reasoning as information needs to be appropriately analyzed before it can be acted upon (Ennis, 1985). For fairmindedness to succeed, I also explained whether I was taking into consideration the thought process and contribution of others or solely focusing on myself. This is to ensure there is no bias in the formulation of justifiable information. On top of that, the stand and objective that I intend to promote needs to be fair and just let it be bias and false information. This all should be done with intent on knowing more and not enforcing previously held unfair biases.

The articles also highlighted what factors might make the proper deduction and utilization of social media more difficult. I found out there is a rise in cyberbullying and hacking trends that seek to deny others the chance and opportunity to utilize social media. I also found out of algorithm codes that are written to predetermine specific search parameters could hinder the truthful acquisition of information. Some of the complexities raised about by this question of the benefits or dangers of the use of social media are that it questions the fabric of an existing piece of technology and only limits it to positive and negative aspects.

The scholarly articles provide a justification and illustration of how crucial the implementation of elements of thoughts is in the use of social media both to me and my children. They discuss the relevance of developing intellectual traits that will assist in the effective usage of social media and the deduction of information. It also highlighted the aspects and skills that we miss and fail to understand in the withholding of information from social media. I find it very insightful and guiding as it has given instruction on how to logically and adequately utilize and benefit from the information.

Conclusion

From the beginning of the discussion, my bias revolved around the positive aspects that are involved with the use of social media. I was able to understand and find out the basic tenets of information and how we can break them down and understand them properly. Needless to say, there is a need to analyze data from a critical point of view. Languages and information need to be scrutinized from a different light to avoid experiencing the negative aspects of information dissemination. Social media is not an avenue that should be taken lightly despite its sense of public service. I came to understand the elements of thought and why they play a role in this topic of discussion. The elements allow for a more logical and focused thought process that analyzes and scrutinizes this information regardless of the source.

I would apply the intellectual standards and elements of reason to this issue or problem through the implementation of purpose-driven information search and discontinuing from the utilization of bias in decision making. Concepts, ideas, and data are used to argue from a justified and factual point of view to arrive at honest and legitimate conclusions. The only critical question that remains is, what can I, as the user, change in my patterns of using social media to avoid negative encounters.
