On this webpage is a series of (3) videos (all which equal 29 minutes and focus on Kim Anderson):   When The Bough Breaks https://unnaturalcauses.org/video_clips.php?vid_filter=Episode%202%20-%20When%20the%20Bough%20Breaks

Although research indicates that racism is still common in the U.S., the film notes that most whites believe that racial discrimination is a problem of the past.

What might Kim Anderson's story tell us about:

i. The relationship between race and health in the United States

ii. The relationship between race, class and gender in the United States

After watching these three clips and learning about Kim Anderson's story I am very surprised about these statistics and feel that the stress black women encounter is definitely a potentially huge factor in these statistics. The relationship between race and health in the United States is very poor. Just because a black women appears healthy and tries to lead a healthy lifestyle, does not mean that they are healthy. Emotional health is very important especially when it comes to being pregnant. The stress is not good for the baby. White people also can appear to be living a healthy lifestyle but really emotionally not be healthy. However, the statistics of women who give birth to preemies from these clips suggest white women emotionally tend to be more healthy. It is really sad when you look at the list of countries and the survival rate of these babies. The United States is way behind in medical advancements. Either these women need to have a better lifestyle or the United States needs to ramp up the resources for these babies being born.

Race, class and gender in the United States plays a big roll in a persons overall health. These three things all affect how someone is treated and the obstacles they face throughout their lives. After watching these clips and learning about Kim's story it shows that all of these affect ones emotional/mental health. A black women of high status, is more likely to have a premature baby than a white women of low status. Race, I think, is the biggest contributing factor in overall health. However, gender and class also are affecting it.

COLLAPSE

1. After watching the videos, I felt as though race and health definitely have a correlation that I didn't once think much of. In the videos, multiple people are looking at why African American women have much more negative pregnancy situations than other racial groups. The statistics and facts show that no matter what the situation is, women who are of African American descent have more pregnancy complications on average than a white individual, for example. People connect negative outlooks to African Americans then assume that these premature babies or infant mortalities are the fault of the parents, but that's not the case. These videos prove that there is an underlying factor that is effecting race and health.

2. Race, class and gender are often looked at as being connected. People tend to have negative thoughts connected to African Americans. For example, they may believe that all black Americans lack a good education, or a good job, or the means to support a family. This isn't true, but when so many people believe it, it starts to have a toll on their well being. The continued racism going on based off of race, c,ass and gender are good examples as to why women of color are struggling to carry their babies to a healthy term. We live in a country that thrives greatly off of white privilege, and because of that, other racial groups are facing hardships.
