SAME DIRECTIONS FOR ALL THREE REPORTS: Students will read the article and:

A. Explain three different ways we know that this article supports the theory.

B. Show in detail how the theory is consistent with the writings of one major person who supports the theory.

40 points maximum for each summary. Students are required to submit two summaries. If a student completes all three, the lowest score will be dropped and the highest two scores will count. Two reports each worth points = 80 points.

8. Articles Project: Even a brief glance at any major newspaper reveals a wide range of social problems: white collar crime, street crime, issues related to Covid-19, issues related to the death of

George Floyd, juvenile delinquency, school violence, drug use, environmental problems, poverty, homelessness, racism, hate crimes, religious intolerance, sexism, homophobia, domestic violence, child abuse, and many more. Each of the theorists that we are studying would suggest different ways of effectively understanding and explaining these issues. Each student will choose one social

problem that you would like to consider over the course of the semester. Each student will submit one paragraph identifying the topic you would like to consider and why you are interested in this topic. This is due on June 9, 2020.

Students are asked to select a current (since January, 2020) article from the newspaper, magazine, or the Internet that relates to your topic.

Students will complete two reports. For the first report students will: (a) include a copy of an article that relates to your topic, (b) analyze the article by showing how two different theorists Durkheim and Mead could be used to explain the same article. How would Durkheim analyze the article? Identify and discuss two different approaches. How would Mead analyze the article? Identify and discuss two different approaches. Recommended Due Date for the first report, worth 50 points, is June 23. Papers must be double spaced and at least 2 pages in length.
