SSG Smith, Bridgett Case Study 3

COLLAPSE

Top of Form

The kinds of health threats that I would anticipate would be exposure, to the influenza virus, other viruses that may be in the area, bacteria, animals and insects carrying diseases or that may be venomous, as well as environmental exposures such as heat and cold. I would also be aware of the possibility of other diseases caused by poor field sanitation, due to the possible stacking of dead bodies.  I would also take into consideration the overall physical health of my troops due to improper nutrition and lack of sleep because of the high stress environment.  I would have mental health concerns of my troops as well due to being away from family and being around the sick and dying.

General threats I would anticipate would be possible violence from the conflict in the area, as well as possible rioting from the people we are taking care of.

To prepare for these I would consult the Army doctrine Reference Publication (ADRP) 3-37 and apply those that are applicable to our mission.  I would ensure vaccination and education of the troops on the possible infections and exposures that they can face in accordance with both DOD and Army Policy.  These I will find in JKO under the MILVAX program and look up our area of operation. I would make sure every soldier knew how to use the personal protective equipment (PPE) and have the Infection Control OIC and or NCOIC give appropriate classes related to infection control per the unit’s SOP’s  . I would concult with nutritional services and have a class on how to maintain proper nutrition in a high stress environment . I would schedule an upfront discussion, and in it be blunt about what they are going to see as far as casualties.  Be honest and let them know that my door is always open and inform them of the other resources in the area, for example Chaplain, Mental Health if it is available. Let them know that it is okay to have a bad day. I would implement and enforce a Battle Buddy system.  I would prepare for the general threats by reviewing ROE per our command’s policy, and what our role is in those instances. Ensure everyone is trained, run scenarios such as “Active Shooter”, so the Soldiers will know how to respond appropriately ii this incident is to arise. I would also have a class from Preventive Med personnel in accordance with FM 4-02.17 Preventative Medicine Services. I would put together a team to oversee field sanitation in accordance with the FM 4-25.12 Unit Field Sanitation Team and FM 21-10 Field Hygiene and Sanitation
