The fish want to swim back to the Pacific but can’t find the direction.

The bird wants to fly back to the east but has no strength.

The horse has fallen in the dry desert.

Fortunately, the fish meets its companion and they get together.

The horse can also find water in arid deserts

As a kind of literary genre, poetry is a special genre. There is usually a great deal of figurative language and rhythm. There are many based devices in a poem, like imagery, form, stanzas and diction etc. However, in my opinion, that are secondary, the most important thing in a poem is what emotion the author wants to convey to audiences through the poem. The poem Small conveys the emotion change from loneliness to rejoice. Also, the poem conveys the information of the globalization where the animals from a place move to another new place.

Small is a simple poem. In the third stanzas, it describes the situation of the animals when they leave their hometown for another place, they feel lonely. That is a common phenomenon of immigrants for globalization. It uses animals such as fish, birds and horses to refer to people, which indicates different races and people with different skin colors leaving their countries to a new place. “From the Pacific to the Atlantic;” “from east to west;” “from the grassland to the desert,” those words indicate people cross the long distance to new place, and people can’t easy meet their family because of the long distance.

In the sixth stanzas, those sentences describe the barriers people met when they get into a new environment. Although globalization is a trend, culture shock still exists. New immigrants have a hard time, whether it's the language barrier, homesickness in a foreign country or adaption to new environment. There are so many challenges to new immigrants.

In the last two stanzas of the poem that describe the positive of globalization, the new immigrants will get help from other people, the new immigrant will overcome the difficult and adapt to the new environment finally. There is another repetition “Thankfully,” is the author convey the hope to audiences.
