Interviewer - Hello Lisa and thank you for coming in today
Participant - You're welcome
Interviewer - Just wanted to thank you for signing the informed consent and the HIPAA privacy
Rule
Participant - Ok
Interviewer - May I asked Have you ever seen a counselor before and what sort of things are you
expecting from counseling
Participant - I did some counseling with my family like 10 years ago and What I expect for what
I would like to happen with us is to learn to handle the stress or depression or Whatever you
would like to call it frustration That I feel from my inability to find a job In the field that I have
been trained for
Interviewer - So okay Lisa can you tell me a little bit About that
Participant - I worked really hard finish my bachelor’s degree and since then I have not started
working yet Because I have not been able to find a job and that bothers me That's a problem for
me
Interviewer - Okay so tell me Lisa What kind of mood does that put you in
Participant -Some days it makes me kind of makes me grumpy I guess if that's the right word
Because I really feel like I ought to be doing more and the fact that I'm not finding the work I
need and stuff is really a problem for me it makes me feel bad that my husband working so hard
To get me through school and now he still has to keep working hard because I can't get the work
I need, job that I want
Interviewer - And So I can say this is what making you feel depressed
Participant - Yes
Interviewer - With finding a job in the field where you earned your degree have you ever thought
about a plan B
Participant - Right now My plan B is to stay at home and keep focusing on my education because
at this point, I'm not ready to give up my education for well for any reason especially for a, like a

service Industry. Job Or something that I'm trained for, but I don't have the physically Ability To
do anymore
Interviewer - Have you ever tried volunteering to get experience
Participant - yes I've been a volunteer for our local elementary school for over 30 years And a
part of the thirty years I was employed there so I had a lot of experience And I volunteer for a lot
of other things too I volunteer with church groups and I volunteered in Community a little bit so
I done a lot of volunteering things and that kept me busy and entertained But if I didn't need to
help my husband with the livelihood stuff I could spend a lot of time volunteering
Interviewer - So with your volunteering work does that go down on your resume When you're
looking for a job in the field
Participant - It does, and I do use it as a resume or as education no not education but as
employment even though it's not paid I use the same dedication and the same work ethic as I do
And my volunteering and my working I use the same ethics as to The volunteering is just as
important as going to work
Interviewer - And that's good Because employer see the dedication and when they call on your
references especially with volunteering you get a good reference and normally or sometimes that
helps with getting the best employment
Participant – Yes
Interviewer - With the bumps you're having finding employment what do you see as the biggest
problem
Participant - There are three things that I feel like it's holding me back it's my inexperience in
the field the other thing is my age and then me being blind is a big drawback Even though they
say the age and disability are not consider part of the process I don't see it that way the way I see
is there not really discriminate against me Because they're giving me the opportunity to interview
but when they see that I'm um older and have no experience and then add to that that I'm blind
that's a triple threat for them
Interviewer - Oh I see, maybe your plan B could be working with older adults instead of children
you think
Participant - That's a possibility that's one thing I have considered
Interviewer - Because I'm thinking with older adults They don't need as much what's the word
(Laughing) attention they don't need more attention than children do
Participant _ that’s true

Interviewer - a plan B May be working with older adults in your field Using your degree
Participant - That’s a good suggestion
Interviewer - Do you have any ideas Of What else you anything you can think of other than
working with children just in case just in case you cannot find a job in the field
Participant - I have applied for a position working with adolescents and adults with mental and
emotional disabilities helping via job coach for them
Interviewer - Oh that sounds wonderful
Participant – Yes, it sounds like a real interesting Job and I have put the application in and I'm
just waiting to see
Interviewer - That sounds like an awesome Plan B
Participant - Yeah, I thought so it's different, but it is it something in my field it's a position that I
would be that I would enjoy doing even though it's outside my experience
Interviewer - right okay so anything else besides the inability to find a job that you want going
on
Participant - No for the most part everything's going well other than that just normal everyday
kids and family not issues but just the day-to-day who turn it is it is to take out the Garbage kind
of days that's the only type of things going on other than that things seem pretty good
Interviewer - How does your husband feel about you feeling depressed because you can find a
job that you want does he boost you up in any kind of way
Participant - Hey so supportive And he says he tells me I've been doing it this long I can do it a
little longer but I see him stressed out and I start feeling guilty and he but he's good about it hey
just say don't worry about it I got this and so but I still worry about it
Interviewer - Yeah, I think we will all still worried about it but if he says he got this less believe
he got this
Participant - He got he got this yeah, I like that
Interviewer - Okay Lisa that's all I have for today I will see you in another session next week
Participant - Okay That sounds good
Interviewer - And we will talk about this some more

Comment Summary Page 2
1. Good start! 2. Good, staying with what the client is talking about and giving permission to go more in depth.
Page 3 3. You are doing a good job with the session, but I do not see you explaining any of the attending skills you are
demonstrating in the session. 4. Maybe replace problem with "challenge" or "issue"?
Page 4 5. It seems like at this point the session is bogging down a little. You are starting to talk more than the client. How can you
keep the client engaged and making more contributions to the session. Why do you think that you started carrying the session and the client backed away?
6. Pretty good first session. You did not include the comments about your attending skills, and as a result you lost points on the assignment.
