Norris experienced a very low, and stable level of emotional wellbeing (the lowest possible value of 1). However, following the intervention in week 5, F. Norris immediately began experiencing an improvement in his level of emotional wellbeing. This level of wellbeing continues to improve for each subsequent week of the intervention, through week 9 (the last observed week). As of week 9, F. Norris experiences the highest possible wellbeing score (10). As such, based on the information observed here, the case of F. Norris suggests that the new cognitive-behavioral therapy intervention is successful at improving levels of emotional wellbeing, and does so in an incremental fashion, having more positive impacts as time with treatment goes on. Critical argument: However, we cannot rule out the possibility that this observed trend is not due to the treatment, but some other, unobserved factor that occured at the same time that treatment began. An example could be an improvement in some life situation that has nothing to do with the therapy. Suggestion as to how this criticism could be avoided: In the future, researchers could attempt to replicate this study with other cases, and examine control conditions without the intervention, in order to better defend against this possibility. | |
